Our annual Rowan Windham Memorial Cereal Drive and Champions for Change program were a huge success!

We exceeded our goal and collected over 280,000 servings of cereal for the San Antonio Food Bank. We also honored 10 children recognized as champions, making a difference in our community. We would not be able to collect cereal every year to combat hunger in our community without the generosity of our employees' donations of cereal boxes.

We celebrated with a reveal event at Methodist Children’s Hospital and a breakfast to honor our champions. In addition to the breakfast, these kiddos were featured on KENS 5 and received a $250 gift certificate to donate to a charity of their choice.

Also, we’d like to thank San Antonio Spurs player Zach Collins for the surprise visit to inspire our champions and our friends at H-E-B and Oak Farms Dairy who each provided 15,000 gallons of milk!

Scott Herring, a 65-year-old, who spends his retirement ranching in Devine, Texas, traveling with his wife, and staying active with his four grandchildren, says he is living proof that cardiovascular disease can happen to anyone.

After learning a mutual friend received a triple bypass surgery due to poor results of a coronary artery calcium scoring test, Scott felt the urge to learn more about his health so he, too, received a scoring. The results came back high, leading to a stress test that he ultimately failed. Although scared, Scott felt reassured after meeting his care team at Methodist Hospital | Stone Oak that he was in good hands.

Scott underwent a cardiac catheterization that revealed two blocked arteries: one at 90% and the other at 80%. With no history of cardiac issues, good results on previous echocardiograms, and no symptoms, Scott was shocked. His coronary artery disease was complex, requiring plaque removal and the placing of stents to keep the blocked arteries open.

Scott is now doing well and is getting back to his hobbies and travels, all thanks to the expertise of his care team. "God had a hand in this. He sent Dr. Hinh Keith Nguyen here to help people," shared Scott.

"The life of every patient is important," shared Dr. Hinh Keith Nguyen, Interventional Cardiologist. "It was important to heal his symptoms, help improve his morale and confidence, and allow him to enjoy his upcoming travels across the United States."

The Methodist Hospital | Stone Oak Complex Coronary Intervention Center specializes in highly complex procedures associated with treating coronary artery disease.

Did you know that 1 in 4 children in our community experience food insecurity?

However, thanks to the legacy of a compassionate little boy named Rowan, we have been helping eliminate childhood hunger for many years. Methodist Children's Hospital is once again hosting the annual Rowan Windham Memorial Cereal Drive among its employees to help reach Rowan’s goal of helping feed kids.

We invite the community to support this initiative through monetary donations to the San Antonio Food Bank. Every $1 donated equals seven servings of cereal!

We sincerely appreciate your support in ending childhood hunger in Bexar County. Together, we can make a difference!

Methodist Hospital | Metropolitan is honored to announce that the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation has named it a "High Performer in LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality." To celebrate this honor and the beginning of Pride Month, the hospital hosted its annual pride flag-raising ceremony.

Despite the significant progress made in the industry, the LGBTQ+ community still encounters numerous challenges in accessing quality healthcare and feeling respected and accepted while receiving care. Methodist Hospital | Metropolitan is committed to ensuring its staff are well-trained, educated, and equipped to care for the LGBTQ+ community with compassion and empathy.

“We are honored to be recognized as a high performer in LGBTQ+ equality," said Greg Seiler, Methodist Hospital | Metropolitan Chief Executive Officer. “We believe that diversity and equality are fundamental to delivering exceptional care and are proud to stand with the LGBTQ+ community in advocating for a future where everyone feels valued and respected. We stand by our mission statement, 'Serving humanity to honor God by providing exceptional and cost-effective health care, accessible to all.’”

To receive this title, healthcare facilities must prove they meet essential criteria, such as upholding patient and employee non-discrimination policies. These policies must specifically mention sexual orientation and gender identity, guarantee equal visitation for same-sex partners and parents, and LGBTQ+ health education for staff.

Why are prenatal and postnatal care so important? Dr. Nichole Van de Putte, Maternal Medical Director at Methodist Hospital | Metropolitan and board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist, shared insight with KSAT 12 News.

Part of what can make the delivery process as smooth as possible is to ensure mom and baby have good prenatal care. It’s crucial for mom to have postnatal care and a support system, as well.

On this day in 1999, Adrian Lozano attended a San Antonio Spurs basketball game to celebrate his 25th birthday. Little did he know, he was about to witness history unfold before his eyes. In that game, Sean Elliott, a transplant recipient, made the game-winning basket in Game 2 of the 1999 Western Conference Finals.

Fast forward to last year, Adrian found himself in need of a life-saving liver transplant and will soon celebrate his 1st transplant anniversary in August.

Today, on May 31, 2024, Adrian celebrates his 50th birthday and the anniversary of witnessing that incredible game on the same day that Sean celebrates the 25th anniversary of his “Memorial Day Miracle.”

The two share a few things in common; they both underwent life-saving organ transplants at Methodist Hospital | Specialty and Transplant, and May 31st is a day of celebration and gratitude in different ways.

Reflecting on his journey, Adrian advocates organ donation, urging others to consider the impact of their generosity – just like Sean. His life is a testament to the power of transplantation, reminding us of the gift of life and the importance of giving back.

Thank you, Sean, for making Adrian’s birthday so special and for using your story to impact the health and wellness of others in our community as our health ambassador. We celebrate you today and your amazing, game-winning shot.

On this Memorial Day and every day, we pay tribute to the courageous men and women in uniform who made the ultimate sacrifice to safeguard our freedom and uphold the values we cherish. We can never fully repay our debt to them, but we can take this time to deeply appreciate their unwavering bravery and selflessness. Let us reflect on our privileges each day and honor the sacrifices made to secure them.

Methodist Hospital | Atascosa is honoring our fallen servicemen and women by displaying a Missing Man Table, which represents the emotions and feelings reserved for those who did not come home.

The symbolism of the Missing Man Table:

- The table is round, to show our everlasting concern for our missing men.

-The cloth is white, symbolizing the purity of their motives when answering the call to serve.

-The single red rose; displayed in a vase, reminds us of the lives of these Americans and their loved ones and friends who keep the faith while seeking answers.

-The red ribbon symbolizes our continued determination to account for our missing.

-A slice of lemon reminds us of their bitter fate; captured and missing in a foreign land.

-A pinch of salt symbolizes the tears of our missing and their families who long for answers after decades of uncertainty.

-The lighted candle reflects our hope for their return, alive or dead.

-The Bible represents the strength gained through faith to sustain us and those lost from our country, founded as one nation under God.

-The glass is inverted, symbolizing their inability to share a toast. The chair is empty, the seat that remains unclaimed at the table.

We are proud to recognize two Methodist Healthcare teams honored with the prestigious Guardian of Excellence Award for 2023.

Facilities or departments honored with this award consistently have patient experience scores in the top 5% in the Press Ganey community. We are excited to share that Methodist ER | Alamo Heights and Methodist Hospital | Specialty and Transplant’s Inpatient Rehabilitation Department received this honor.

"This award is very impressive, as only a small number of units and facilities receive it yearly. To earn it, a facility must be in the top 5% in the country for the Overall Rating of Care for three consecutive quarters,” shared Katherine Kalthoff, MHA, CPXP, LSSGB, System Vice President of Patient Experience and Bioethics for Methodist Healthcare. “It really speaks to the care teams' commitment to delivering exceptional patient care, even under the most trying circumstances. Teamwork, focus, and an unwavering dedication to patient care and safety are what got them this award, and we couldn’t be happier for them!”

Thank you, Sean and Claudia, for making our team members feel appreciated.

Hospital Week is the perfect time to acknowledge and celebrate the outstanding accomplishments of our teams and facilities!

Methodist Hospital | Stone Oak recently achieved the fastest door-to-balloon time in its history when treating a patient with ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) - the most severe type of heart attack. The term 'door-to-balloon time' refers to the time it takes for a patient to receive an angioplasty balloon procedure to open the blocked artery after entering the emergency room.

When it comes to a heart attack, it's crucial to remember that time equals muscle. Every minute the artery remains closed during a heart attack leads to further heart muscle damage and worse outcomes, complications, and a higher rate of death. Thanks to the efficient and collaborative work of EMS, the emergency department, the rapid response team, and the hospital's cath lab team and physicians, they were able to accomplish this STEMI in just 7 minutes!

We extend our heartfelt congratulations and deep appreciation to all the teams involved that made this possible. This achievement is just one example of Methodist Healthcare's dedication to excellence in cardiovascular care.

“She came here from the Philippines by herself, with no family or friends—just her match mates—and started a brand-new life here. She walked just so that I could run.”

Kym, a nurse at Methodist Hospital | Northeast, surprised her mother, Marlene, who has been a nurse at the same hospital for 33 years, with a Mother's Day tribute video to honor her sacrifices and resilience.

Marlene has been a source of inspiration, mentorship, and best friend to Kym. Following in her mother's footsteps, Kym pursued a career in nursing at the same hospital. They worked the night shift together for nearly a decade, carpooling and taking lunches together. Two years ago, with the support of her mother, Kym started growing her career in nursing leadership.

The tribute video was a beautiful gesture of love and appreciation, especially during Nurses Week and Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
