Michel Odent’s work reshaped the way we understand birth. He reminded the world that childbirth is not just a medical event—it’s also a profoundly emotional and transformative experience.
When he spoke of protecting the emotional state of pregnant women, he was pointing to something often overlooked: that a woman’s feelings of safety, calm, and trust directly shape her birth experience. Stress, fear, and pressure can interfere with the natural process of labor, while feeling supported, respected, and truly seen allows mothers to birth with confidence.
This is exactly why doulas are so necessary. We are there to hold space, to listen without judgment, to remind families of their power, and to help protect that emotional environment that is just as vital as the physical. Whether a mother chooses an epidural, a home birth, or anything in between, her emotional well-being deserves care and protection.
As we honor Michel Odent’s incredible legacy, we also recommit ourselves to his vision: a world where every birthing woman is surrounded not only with medical skill, but with humanity, dignity, and compassion.
