Empower House

Empower House Transforming Communities through Women and Girls. Our programs reach over 3,500 women, girls and families each year.

Empower House SA (formerly The Martinez Street Women’s Center) is in its 22nd year serving San Antonio’s East, West, and South community. Our Community Health Promotora Program strengthens families by increasing access to preventative health services, facilitating referrals to basic needs resources and enhancing the knowledge and awareness of health issues in our community. Through our Girl Zone Program (after school sessions and Summer Camp) we enhance academic potential, nurture high self-esteem, and support the healthy development of girls age 11-18. We provide critical services, including a FREE Breast Cancer Clinic and FREE after school and summer camp for low-income families in San Antonio’s East and South East community.

🗣️ Community matters. Voices matter. Presence matters.

On January 22, 2026 at 1:00 PM, San Antonio City Council will hold a special session to discuss SAPD’s cooperation with federal agencies, including ICE.

Decisions made in this room affect immigrant families, community trust, and how safe our neighbors feel in their own city.

What is a Community Circle?
It’s a space to slow down, listen deeply, and be held in community.
In this reel, our Circle Keeper Deanna Santiago shares how circles create room for honesty, healing, and collective wisdom.

We’re opening our first virtual circle of the year, centered on Revolutionary Sisterhood. A space for connection, reflection, and showing up for one another with intention.

Curious about taking part?

Because transformation doesn’t happen alone. It happens in circle.

✨ Final Agent of Change Spotlight: Alejandra “Mera Mera” Sánchez Alanís ✨

Translingual poet. Visual artist. Educator. Community builder.
Alejandra “Mera Mera” Sánchez Alanís creates work that lives at the intersection of language, body, and ancestral memory. Drawing from years of teaching poetry in Mexico, her multidisciplinary practice weaves spoken word and visual poetics into pieces that move like color across the page and the body.

As the host of Plática y Poetics, Alejandra uplifts q***r, migrant, and BIPOC artists through dialogue, storytelling, and radical imagination—turning art into a living bridge between people and possibility.

This event is proudly presented as a collaboration between Empower House and the Carver Community Cultural Center, bringing together community, culture, and creative resistance for DreamWeek.

✨ Introducing our next Agent of Change: Mandy Lynn ✨

Writer. Educator. Theater artist. Open mic host. Mother of five.
Mandy Lynn brings her whole self to the work and the mic.

She has represented San Antonio on eight national slam poetry teams, using art as a tool for truth, healing, and resistance. Through poetry, performance, and punk protest, Mandy advocates fiercely for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. When she’s not hosting open mics or teaching, she’s holding it down on bass and backup vocals for The Guillotinas, a femme-forward protest band shaking the walls.

Mandy also serves as the Public Class Coordinator for Gemini Ink, helping make creative writing accessible to our community, because stories deserve room to breathe.
