ā€¼ļøWe have a zero-tolerance policy for disrespect. Thank you for visiting PRMA's Breast Cancer Reconstruction Community. Are you interested in breast reconstruction? Want to learn more about your options? Our goal is to help breast cancer patients learn more about breast reconstruction and the latest procedures available. On

ly 30% of women facing mastectomy for breast cancer are offered breast reconstruction. With your help, we can change this. We want women to realize that breast reconstruction is not only possible but also an option for them. Breast reconstruction is NOT a cosmetic procedure; it is every woman's right. PRMA Plastic Surgery specializes in advanced breast cancer reconstruction techniques including the DIEP, SIEA, GAP & TUG flap procedures, vascularized lymph node transfer, fat grafting, Alloderm One-step, and nipple-sparing mastectomy. We are In-Network for most US plans. Our most common reconstructive procedure, the DIEP flap, uses the patient's lower abdominal tissue to reconstruct a "natural", warm, soft breast. Unlike the TRAM flap, the DIEP flap preserves all the abdominal muscles. Patients undergoing DIEP flap reconstruction essentially receive a tummy tuck at the same time as the breast reconstruction. Since the abdominal muscles are spared, recovery is easier and patients retain abdominal muscle strength long-term. We have a lot of very useful information on our website http://PRMA-enhance.com - Please visit to learn more about today's most advanced breast reconstruction procedures. Please also sign-up for our newsletter to keep up to date on the latest breast reconstruction news. Feeling truly heard makes all the difference.

What is the likelihood of breast cancer after a preventative mastectomy? šŸ¤”

This is one of the most common questions we hear.

šŸ‘‰ Dr. Pisano explains that the risk is very, very low. During a preventative mastectomy, the overwhelming majority of breast tissue is removed, which leads to a substantial reduction in breast cancer risk.

That said, no surgery can remove 100% of breast tissue. In nipple-sparing mastectomies, a very small amount of duct tissue must remain by definition—but this does not negate the powerful risk reduction these procedures provide.

Understanding the nuance matters. Knowledge empowers confident decision-making. šŸ’—

šŸ’¬ Considering prophylactic reconstruction or exploring your options after mastectomy? Nothing replaces a personalized consultation. Visit our website or tap the šŸ”— in bio to learn more—and let’s discuss what’s right for you.

PRMA patients—we need your help šŸ’—

Whether you’re just beginning to explore breast reconstruction, currently in the recovery process, or reflecting back on your experience, we want to hear your questions.

What were the things you found yourself wondering before surgery? What surprised you after? What do you wish you had known sooner? šŸ¤”

Your questions help guide meaningful conversations—and allow our surgeons to share answers that truly matter to patients at every stage of their journey. Drop your questions in the comments ā¬‡ļø or send us a DM. šŸ“² Nothing is too small, too early, or too specific.

Let’s turn your questions into answers that can help others feel informed, prepared, and supported. ✨

Implant‑based reconstruction can sound appealing—and for some women, it works well. But as Dr. Whipple explains, when implants fail, the complications can be significant.

At PRMA, we see patients travel from all over the country after implant reconstruction doesn’t go as planned.

One of the most common issues is capsular contracture, where scar tissue forms tightly around the implant. This can cause the breast to feel firm or painful and often changes how it looks, leaving women uncomfortable both physically and emotionally.

Understanding the potential risks of implant‑based reconstruction is an important part of making an informed decision. Education empowers patients—and knowing your options can make all the difference. šŸ“ššŸ’—

Breast reconstruction has evolved—and for good reason. šŸ’—

The shift from the TRAM flap to the DIEP flap reflects a broader movement in reconstruction: one that prioritizes not just appearance, but long‑term health, strength, and quality of life.

Unlike the TRAM flap, which sacrifices abdominal muscle, the DIEP flap preserves those muscles—helping reduce complications, shorten recovery, and support a more active lifestyle after surgery.

By protecting the body’s natural strength and function, DIEP reconstruction supports healing that lasts well beyond surgery. Many women find they’re better able to return to daily life feeling stronger, more capable, and more comfortable in their bodies.

At PRMA, we’ve embraced DIEP as the modern gold standard and continue to push reconstruction forward through innovations like High‑Def DIEP for enhanced aesthetics and TruSenseā„¢ for potential sensation restoration. Because reconstruction isn’t just about replacing what was lost—it’s about helping you feel whole again. ✨

Knowing what to expect after a DIEP flap can make the recovery feel far less overwhelming. šŸ’—

As Dr. Merceron explains, patients typically spend 2–3 days in the hospital so we can closely monitor blood flow to the flap. šŸ„

After heading home, follow‑up visits help us check drains, answer questions, and make sure healing is progressing well.

Over the next several weeks, energy gradually returns ✨
—and by around 4–6 weeks, many patients are feeling more like themselves and able to get back to daily life and work.

Later check‑ins allow us to focus on long‑term healing and, if desired, discuss options like scar revision or fat grafting.

Every step is intentional, supportive, and tailored to you. šŸ‘

Last week, our team had the opportunity to attend the 5th Annual ARSA Scientific Summit—an inspiring gathering focused on collaboration, innovation, and advancing reconstructive care.

PRMA is proud to be part of ARSA (the Advanced Reconstructive Surgery Alliance)—a national alliance of leading microsurgeons and specialty practices dedicated to advancing complex reconstructive surgery through shared learning, research, and innovation. This means our surgeons aren’t working in isolation—they’re constantly collaborating with and learning from peers who are pushing the field forward.

Throughout the Summit, surgeons from across the country and around the world came together to teach, train, and refine advanced techniques—including hands‑on education in the cadaver lab, where Dr. Merceron participated alongside fellow experts. Many of these techniques aren’t just being studied—they’re being developed by ARSA surgeons themselves.

While PRMA is widely known for breast reconstruction, all of our surgeons are microsurgeons. That expertise extends far beyond the breast, encompassing complex nerve reconstruction and other highly specialized procedures. Being part of ARSA allows us to continue growing those skills, so we can bring the very best care back to our patients. šŸ’™

For our patients, this means your care is shaped not only by the experience of your individual surgeon—but by the collective knowledge, innovation, and dedication of a broader community committed to better outcomes, today and in the future.

We’re grateful to be part of this collaborative effort and excited to keep learning, growing, and delivering the highest level of reconstructive care.

ā€œOne of the biggest misconceptions about breast reconstruction is that it’s purely cosmetic.ā€

As Dr. C explains, this is not a breast augmentation and not a ā€˜b**b job.’ When a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, her world is turned upside down—and comments like ā€˜at least now you can get the b**b job you’ve always wanted’ can be incredibly painful and dismissive.

Breast reconstruction is about healing, restoring what cancer has taken, and helping women move forward with confidence. Our goal is always to achieve results that look and feel beautiful—while prioritizing health, peace of mind, and long‑term outcomes. These are results women live with for the rest of their lives, created with the intention of putting cancer behind them or minimizing future risk.

Another common myth? āš ļø That reconstruction isn’t covered by insurance. In most cases, if the mastectomy is covered, reconstruction is too.

Misconceptions matter because they shape how women feel during one of the most vulnerable times in their lives.

Education makes a difference—and that’s why we’re here. To listen, to guide, and to support every step of the way. šŸ’—
