September is NICU Awareness Month 💚

It’s a time to shine a light on the tiniest but mightiest fighters, our NICU babies, and the incredible teams who care for them around the clock. From beeping monitors to tiny footprints that could fit on your fingertip, every moment in the NICU is filled with courage, hope, and love.

What is the NICU?
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a highly specialized hospital unit designed to care for premature and critically ill newborns. Babies in the NICU may need extra support for conditions such as:

• Premature birth
• Low birth weight
• Respiratory distress or chronic lung disease
• Heart conditions
• Infections or sepsis
• Feeding or growth difficulties

In the NICU, care is led by a dedicated team of neonatologists, neonatal nurses, respiratory therapists, dietitians, and other specialists who provide round-the-clock attention to ensure these babies have the best chance to grow stronger.

Meet Marco!

Marco has SMA Type 2 and has been part of Wave before transitioning to Sail as an adult. Though ventilator dependent with a tracheostomy, recent medications have helped slow SMA’s progression, giving him the strength to go without a ventilator for about an hour at a time.

This newfound independence allowed Marco to enjoy his first day at the beach! With a special wheelchair and the support of his family, he rolled across the sand and even splashed in the water.

The trip to South Padre Island with his immediate and extended family was unforgettable, and his nurse says this marks the start of an annual tradition. Marco’s positivity continues to shine brighter with every adventure!

At Wave Healthcare, we’re proud to provide expert care for people living with SMA.

Patricia has 10 years of experience as a Respiratory Therapist, and we’ve been lucky
enough to have her at Wave Healthcare for the past year! She’s worked with many patients who have SMA over her career, and she’s learned how instrumental respiratory care is for them.

However, the most important thing she’s learned is the team effort it is to care for SMA patients. It’s important to have a group of healthcare professionals rallying around a family with a member living with SMA.

As our close friend and colleague starts her new journey into retirement, we’re taking this chance to shine a light on her.

Because how could we not celebrate the remarkable legacy of Dr. Willey‑Courand? She founded the Cystic Fibrosis Center at the University of Texas Health Science Center in 2014 and led it with remarkable compassion and dedication.

From the very beginning, she’s made her patients’ comfort and care a top priority and that’s a standard we at Wave hold close to our hearts. This bond led to many years of support and collaboration.

While we’ll miss her warm presence and unwavering support for the CF community, she’s assured us she won’t be going too far… Unless she’s off on a well-deserved vacation (she’s excited to go back to Iceland!).

From all of us at Wave Healthcare: Thank you, Dr. Willey‑Courand, for the countless lives you've brightened and the trails you've blazed. The CF community, and the future, are infinitely better because of you.

Spinal Muscular Atrophy care is a team effort, involving families, therapists,
pulmonologists, nutritionists, and more. Early support means a better quality of life.

The goal for SMA patients is to improve comfort and quality of life, allow safe care at home, prevent pneumonia/respiratory infections, and reduce hospitalizations.
Let’s raise awareness and advocate for access to comprehensive, family-centered care.

Children with SMA may face challenges with breathing, swallowing, and nutrition due to weakened muscles, but with the right support, they can thrive.
