Our story starts in 1944 when community leaders began discussing the possibility of bringing a medical school to San Antonio. As the city grew, it’s medical needs increased. We evolved in response to that growth and are now the center for healing 5.6 million patients every year from all over South Texas, the U.S. and the world.
Commonly known as the Medical Center, we are nine major medical institutions including UT Health San Antonio, Methodist Healthcare Hospitals, and the Mays Cancer Center, and hundreds of medical offices that employ more than 30,000 people. Each institution has its own range of specialties including cardiovascular, orthopedic, oncology, neonatal, pediatric, stroke care, and women’s services, among others. Beyond healthcare, we are a major hub for medical education, research, and technology in San Antonio.
Our growth is only possible because research drives everything we do. We conduct more than 500 new research studies each year that lead to groundbreaking prevention and treatment techniques and cutting-edge technology for surgeries. Our efforts have developed life-saving techniques and innovations in heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and cancer treatment and prevention. The University Transplant Center is known for its trailblazing operations in the treatment of emphysema and pulmonary hypertension. The Mays Cancer Center is one of the world’s premier cancer research and treatment centers providing total patient care through state-of-the-art technology.
There’s no question that we will continue to grow. With 280 acres of undeveloped land, we have developed a Master Plan Expansion to enhance our aesthetics and provide amenities such as retail/dining space, walkways, courtyards, open greens, picnic spaces, and theatrical performances for our visitors and employees.
Despite how much we’ve grown, one mission unites our thousands of physicians and medical personnel: making you better so you can live life to the fullest. You are at the heart of all our efforts to improve and be the common center for research, education, technology, and healthcare.
