As recovery and clean up efforts continue, we wanted to share some helpful information regarding respiratory issues that can arise after flooding, especially for those with allergies and asthma. Below are some helpful tips on how to mitigate potential health issues in the aftermath of disaster, from our friends at Allergy & Asthma Network.
Our hearts go out to everyone affected by the flash floods across Texas Hill Country. The loss of life in those communities is devastating.
For residents, it’s also important to remember that floodwaters can bring hidden threats that worsen asthma and allergy symptoms, like mold spores, dust, debris, and pollutants stirred up from homes and industrial sites. Here’s how to stay safe and breathe easier during the emergency response and cleanup:
▶︎Wear proper protection, such as N95 masks, to reduce breathing irritants in the air.
▶︎Remove floodwater from homes as soon as possible. Ventilate and use dehumidifiers or fans once power is safely restored.
▶︎Look for signs of mold damage. Clean small areas with detergent and water; use bleach on hard, nonporous surfaces. Use a HEPA-filter vacuum to remove dust and debris.
▶︎For severe home flooding, work with a professional to inspect your home and replace drywall and insulation.
▶︎Follow your Asthma Action Plan and keep all medications, including backup medications, with you.
