University Health Pediatric Blood and Cancer Center The South Texas Pediatric Blood and Cancer Center is a partnership between University Health System

Our comprehensive programs include:

Oncology
We are members of the Children's Oncology Group, an international consortium of institutions dedicated to curing cancer in children and adolescents by offering state-of-the-art therapy in the form of clinical trials. We provide comprehensive assessment and treatment in a multidisciplinary fashion in specialized programs:
• Leukemia & Lymphoma Program

Bone & Solid Tumor Program
• Neuro-Oncology Program
• Cancer Genetics and Risk Assessment
• Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Program
Furthermore, the Division holds a federal grant for the South Texas Pediatric Minority Based NCORP, a consortium of five south Texas institutions whose mission is to facilitate access to COG clinical trials for minority children and adolescents affected by cancer. Cancer Survivorship Program
Our Childhood Survivorship program is staffed with a team of two physicians, a psychologist, a nursing specialist, and a social worker who serve to address the physical as well as psycho-social needs of our cancer survivors. Hematology
Our hematology program offers comprehensive services spanning the spectrum of hematologic diseases including bleeding and thrombotic disorders, sickle cell disease, marrow failure syndromes as well as genetic evaluation and counseling. These services are provided through our various outpatient clinical sites as well as through our dedicated hematology consultation service. South Texas Comprehensive Hemophilia & Thrombophilia Treatment Center

The STCHTTC a comprehensive pediatric and adult program for patients with hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, platelet and clotting disorders. Covering a catchment from Austin to the Border, the STCHTTC is a federally designated Hemophilia Treatment Center, providing comprehensive services, including initial diagnosis, treatment, education and supportive counseling. Through the comprehensive care model, the Center offers access to physical therapy, dentistry, psychosocial support and clinical trials. At the South Texas HTC, our team takes a family-based approach to care, through which we address all aspects of life with a bleeding disorder in order to develop an individualized management plan. South Texas Sickle Cell & Thalassemia Center

As the regional comprehensive Sickle Cell Center, we are dedicated to the prevention of complications in children living with sickle cell related disorders. Services include:
• Genetic counseling of hemoglobinopathy identified by newborn screen
• Comprehensive annual evaluations offering education about pain, infections and pulmonary complications
• Transcranial doppler for primary stroke prevention
• Hydroxyurea for disease modification
• Chronic transfusion therapy including erythrocytopheresis and iron chelation
• Combined Sickle Cell and Pulmonology Clinic
• Community outreach including schools, churches, camps and support groups for sickle cell awareness/education
• Psychosocial support for educational testing and evaluation of transition readiness

We are also hosting an open house for pediatric cancer families on Saturday, April 16. This of course includes families who have lost a child. We’ll have face painting and balloon animals, popcorn, food and will also be hosting a blood drive. We’d like to thank Superior Mobile Health for sponsoring this event!
