Life changes are never easy and navigating through them as a child can be scary. Talk to your kiddos about their fears and anxieties towards their transition to a new school.
Some ways that you can decrease these fears is:
1. Ask if they have concerns about their new school. Follow up with open-ended questions DON'T ASSUME.
2. Map out the school, google pictures, review their schedule. You can sometimes schedule a time to visit to walk through before the first day
3. Help your child identify safe people in the school (Teachers, Counselors, Nurses, Security etc)
4. Have them make a plan with a friend to check in with at lunch or recess.
5. Teach them breathing exercises to calm down or when to identify they need a break (walking to get a drink of water or going to the restroom to splash cool water on their faces).
6. If there's a meet the teacher event at your school take FULL advantage of it to explore the class, meet the teacher (bonus if child has questions you can make a list to ask), and explore the campus if allowed.
7. If your child is nervous about making friends explore some of the extracurriculars that they can get involved in- reach out to the sponsors or coaches of those organizations to learn more!
