This story seems uncommon, but it’s very much the opposite: common and happening right in plain sight.
I’ve worked with clients in similar situations - groomed online by predators they thought were “friends.” The truth was they were far from peers - they were grown criminal manipulative sexual predators, intent on extorting money, or pictures for distribution, from their victims.
Where did they meet them?
They slid into their IG DMs. They added them on Snap. They befriended them on Minecraft or Madden.
They are everywhere, and they are pure evil.
One of my clients was groomed so well they gave out lots of personal information - their neighborhood, their parent’s workplace, pictures of their cherished pets. Provocative pictures were exchanged.
Then this criminal demanded specific pictures and video, threatening to kill the animals and send the provocative picture to the parents and other family. Scared and terrified, my client complied.
This happened to my client in middle school. Luckily my client told a sibling, who went to their parents before things got worse.
Please monitor your kid’s online activity. Things can escalate very quickly.
I laud the parents of Jordan DeMay for speaking out about this while they are suffering the unthinkable. And hopeful his story will educate and save others before it’s too late.
Jordan Demay was a handsome, popular high school athlete and homecoming king. But now the community of Marquette, Michigan, is mourning the teen’s death.
