What is Cystic Fibrosis?
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is an inherited genetic disease that causes thick, sticky mucus to build up, primarily clogging the lungs, pancreas, and other organs, leading to breathing problems, infections, and digestive issues by blocking ducts and pathways.
It’s caused by a faulty gene (CFTR) that controls salt and water movement, and while there’s no cure, treatments like physical therapy, medicines, and specialized nutrition have significantly improved life expectancy, with many living into adulthood.
Symptoms range from mild to severe and can include persistent cough, greasy stools, poor growth, salty skin, and wheezing, with diagnosis often through newborn screening, gene, or sweat tests.
