Alibaba has unveiled an AI model called GRAPE that can detect gastric cancer from CT scans, including in early stages, offering a non-invasive alternative to traditional endoscopy procedures that many patients avoid.

Co-developed with Zhejiang Cancer Hospital, the model achieved 85.1% sensitivity and 96.8% specificity, outperforming radiologists by over 20% in early-stage detection, according to a study published in Nature Medicine.

The system will be deployed for large-scale screening in Zhejiang and Anhui provinces, building on Alibaba’s previous success with pancreatic cancer detection through CT-based AI tools.
