WHAT IS PRESBYOPIA?

Presbyopia is the gradual loss of your eyes' ability to focus on nearby objects. It's a natural, often annoying part of aging. Presbyopia usually becomes noticeable in your early to mid-40s and continues to worsen until around age 65.

Symptoms:
Presbyopia develops gradually. You may first notice these signs and symptoms after age 40:
• A tendency to hold reading material farther away to make the letters clearer
• Blurred vision at normal reading distance
• Eyestrain or headaches after reading or doing close-up work

Treatment:
The goal of treatment is to compensate for the inability of your eyes to focus on nearby objects. Treatment options include wearing corrective eyeglasses (spectacle lenses) or contact lenses, undergoing refractive surgery, or getting lens implants for presbyopia.

PRK vs LASIK

During a PRK procedure, the top layer of the cornea is gently removed to allow access to the part of the eye that your doctor will reshape with the excimer laser. This removed outer layer will regenerate and repair itself naturally during the recovery process.

With LASIK surgery, your doctor will make a hinged flap on the surface of the cornea using an intralase femtosecond laser. He will then lift the flap to access the part of the eye that is reshaped with the excimer laser. The flap is then realigned after the LASER treatment is complete.

The main corrective portion of the surgeries are both the same. Once your doctor has access to the deeper corneal tissue layers, an extremely precise laser called an excimer laser will be used to fix your specific refractive correction or abnormalities in the eye. This portion of the process only takes about 30-60 seconds. The laser technology used in both PRK and LASIK will result in the same results or outcomes.

The recovery and healing for the two procedures is a little different.

WHAT MAKES YOU UNSUITABLE FOR LASIK SURGERY?

1. UNSTABLE VISION
To get LASIK, your vision must remain unchanged for at least a year. This means that if you have unstable vision, at least for right now, LASIK is not right for you.

2. UNRESOLVED VISION PROBLEMS
Dry eye is a common condition that may not seem serious but can prevent you from being eligible for LASIK.
Scarring from a previous eye injury or surgery can impede the surgeon’s ability to perform the operation safely. Other eye diseases that affect the cornea or infections must be resolved before you can get LASIK.

3. HEALTH CONCERNS
You must be in good health, as you will need every advantage to help you recover from LASIK quickly and safely.
Autoimmune disorders or diseases that make it harder for your body to heal will disqualify you from LASIK. This includes anything that could affect your ability to heal like diabetes, HIV/AIDS, and rheumatoid arthritis.

4. CORNEAL THICKNESS
Your cornea is a very thin covering of tissue, and the thickness can be measured in fractions of a millimeter. But LASIK surgeons deal in precision, so having enough tissue to work with makes a difference.
If you are someone that has abnormally thin corneas, you may have to accept an alternate surgery, such as PRK. During LASIK, a tiny amount of corneal tissue will be removed.
If your corneas are thin, removing tissue from the cornea could cause complications.

5. UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS
LASIK is an amazing procedure that has improved the vision of millions of people all over the world. Even if you are eligible, it isn’t a guarantee of perfect vision, and it does come with some risks. After all, it is a surgery.
With a success rate of over 97%, the odds of you leaving the clinic satisfied is better than ever. If you don’t have realistic expectations before LASIK, you may not be a good candidate for the procedure.

HOW MUCH TIME SHOULD I TAKE OFF FROM WORK AFTER LASIK?

This is a perfectly valid question — we understand that you have professional obligations and responsibilities at the office. However, that is no reason not to invest the time into improving your most precious sense: your eyesight.

What we tell our patients is this: you can ask to take off however many days you are comfortable with.

Most of our patients have their LASIK procedures in the morning or afternoon and take the rest of the day off from work. After your procedure, you will need to go home and take a three to four hour nap. This nap is a very important part of the healing process. You need to relax your eyes and avoid straining them by watching television or reading.
Most of our patients return to work the next day, after a quick post-operative check to ensure their eyes are healing properly. This visit usually only lasts 5 to 10 minutes.

So, Will I Need Glasses After LASIK or Not?

You will not need distance glasses after your LASIK surgery in the vast majority of cases if you are under 40 years old. You will only need reading glasses at the same (or approximately the same) age that you would have needed them if you did not have LASIK surgery.
As you get older (over 40 years old), the natural near vision you may notice things up close becoming blurry even if you have had LASIK previously. This is when you should schedule an eye exam to see if reading glasses are necessary to improve your up-close vision or if you are a potential candidate for monovision LASIK; where one eye can be made near-sighted to use for reading or near tasks and the opposite eye is made for distance vision.

Is It Safe to Rub Your Eyes?

Rubbing your eyes can mean many things. You might have an eye infection, allergies, or another health condition. Eye rubbing might also be a reflex or habit.

You should avoid rubbing your eyes because you can damage them if you rub too hard or too often.
Rubbing too hard or too frequently might damage the lens of your eye or the cornea. This could result in vision impairment or an infection that needs medical attention.

Tips to stop rubbing your eyes

The best way to stop rubbing your eyes is to treat the underlying cause that is making them itch. Treatment can include:
• Over-the-counter medication: Saline or Lubricant eye drops can cleanse your eyes and flush out any dirt that might be causing irritation.
• Prescription medication: Your eye doctor will have to prescribe medicine to treat your eye allergies.

Can LASIK cause dry eye?

Out of all the possible side effects of LASIK, dry eye is actually by far the most likely to occur. In fact, roughly 95 percent of all patients who undergo the procedure experience the symptoms of dry eye syndrome to some degree immediately afterwards. In most cases, dry eye subsides after a couple of weeks, although in some cases it can last for up to a year. For most patients, symptoms of dry eye are mild to moderate, and not severe enough to interfere with daily activities and symptoms can be managed with lubricant eye drops or medication.
