IE-CAMFT Statement on Recent Supreme Court Decision
The Inland Empire Chapter of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists acknowledges the recent decision by the Supreme Court of the United States regarding Colorado’s law on conversion therapy for minors.
As a professional organization representing licensed Marriage and Family Therapists, associates, and students, we want to be clear:
IE-CAMFT does not support therapeutic practices that aim to change or suppress an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity.
Grounded in Ethics & Clinical Responsibility
Our position is guided by the ethical standards of California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists and the core values of our profession:
Do No Harm (Nonmaleficence): Research and clinical consensus have consistently shown that so-called “conversion therapy” poses significant risks, including increased depression, anxiety, and suicidality.
Affirming Client Dignity: MFTs are committed to honoring and affirming the lived experiences, identities, and autonomy of all clients, including LGBTQ+ individuals.
Culturally Responsive Care: Ethical practice requires that we understand and support clients within their cultural, familial, and social contexts—without imposing harmful or stigmatizing frameworks.
Distinguishing Legal Rulings from Ethical Practice
While the Court’s decision raises important constitutional questions about free speech, legal permissibility does not equate to ethical appropriateness in clinical care.
As clinicians, we are bound not only by law, but by:
Professional ethical codes
Evidence-based practice
Our duty to protect vulnerable populations, including minors
Our Commitment as a Chapter
IE-CAMFT remains committed to:
Promoting affirming, trauma-informed, and evidence-based care
Supporting clinicians in ethical decision-making and professional integrity
Advocating for client well-being, especially for marginalized communities
Providing education and resources that reflect best practices in mental health care
We recognize that this ruling may create confusion or concern among clinicians and the communities we serve. We encourage our members to remain grounded in ethical standards, seek consultation when needed, and continue to provide care that is compassionate, affirming, and clinically sound.
