Patient Decision-Making is
BEST PRACTICE

Particularly for parents/guardians:

• Conduct thorough research, considering multiple perspectives
• Engage in open dialogue with your healthcare provider, asking questions and seeking clarification
• Critically evaluate the information presented, identifying potential inconsistencies
• Request evidence-based data to support recommendations
• Trust your instincts and values in making informed decisions

Patients should collaborate with their healthcare providers as partners, feeling empowered to make decisions that prioritize their well-being and autonomy, without fear of retribution or judgment.

Things your midwife wants you to know, but may not say out loud… because we believe in your strength and resilience.

We greet you with a smile and a calm demeanor, but our minds are already focused on supporting you through the journey to delivery.

We carefully observe your body language, breathing patterns, and contractions to tailor our care to your unique needs. We also take note of your partner’s demeanor and work together to establish a plan that ensures your comfort and safety.

We are attuned to the subtle changes in your contraction patterns, recognizing when you are transitioning and nearing the moment of birth.

We offer encouragement and support as you push through the final stages, eagerly awaiting the first cry of your newborn.

Every birth is a unique and powerful experience that touches our hearts and souls.

Sometimes, challenges arise, and we spring into action to safeguard your well-being.

Behind the scenes, we advocate tirelessly on your behalf, ensuring that your choices and journey are respected.

We hear your words of frustration and fear, and we smile knowingly, for we understand that you are on the cusp of a life-changing moment.

We don’t always share our own struggles and challenges, but know that we are committed to supporting you every step of the way.

The moment of birth is a profound experience that can evoke a wide range of emotions – joy, wonder, and sometimes heartbreak.

As midwives, we carry the memories of the families we serve with us forever, and we are honored to be a part of your journey.

So here’s the truth that we want you to know:

We, your nurse midwives and licensed midwives, don’t just do our job – we are invested in your well-being, your empowerment, and your success.

We believe in the transformative power of birth and the resilience of the human spirit.

You ARE ENTITLED to choose YOU’RE provider of choice and be supported along your journey.

We hope you will always remember, that YOUR midwife, does so much more for you, than what you see.

Here are a few memorable moments we hope you’ll enjoy seeing.

Midwives role is extensive and covers many aspects of care.

Most importantly, midwives are PRESENT throughout one’s pregnancy journey.
This is a unique quality and one of immense importance.

A midwife’s ‘Presence’ means:
*They get to know their client’s and their families
*They LISTEN to those whom seek their services
*They Offer SUPPORT and Guidance
*They provide evidence based education
*They work in partnership with those under their care
*Midwives ‘Network’ with and ‘Collaborate’ with multidisciplinary professionals
*They enable people to retain THEIR autonomy
*Midwives ADVOCATE for their client’s

WHO's emphasis on midwives' roles can lead to better pregnancy outcomes by:

1. Encouraging personalized care:
Continuous support from midwives fosters trust and understanding.
2. Risk management:
Midwives can identify potential issues and collaborate with physicians if/when need arises.
3. Holistic approach: Multidisciplinary care considers physical, emotional, and social aspects of care.

By promoting this approach, WHO aims to reduce disparities and improve maternal and infant health worldwide.

Seeking Midwifery Care offers a multitude of benefits with optimal outcomes.

The World Health Organization (WHO) today released new guidance to help countries adopt and expand midwifery models of care - where midwives serve as the main care provider for women and babies throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period.
