Jenny Fowler, Certified Nutrition Consultant I am a certified nutrition consultant & educator. I help people create a healthy foundation that they enjoy! Send me a message if you have any questions!

Tune in for fun info on food, natural body care & more! I see clients in person as well as by phone, and teach workshops and wellness programs throughout the SF Bay Area. I offer an initial 20 minute complimentary session to discuss how we could work together. Healthy eating has been important to me my whole life. With parents who entered the health food industry when whole wheat bread was an anomaly, I remember being excited to go to college and buy my very own fluffy, white bread and smooth, Jiffy peanut butter, which, to my surprise, ended up sitting in my cabinet virtually untouched for the entire year. Turns out I was a healthy eater at heart!

๐Ÿฅœ Nuts are a great source of protein and fat. The crunchy snack is known to promote better heart health, lower cholesterol, and even weight loss.

๐Ÿ˜‹ Even though nuts are a healthful food it's possible to overeat them. Although they contain healthy fat, we don't want to overload our bodies with them. Which is easy to do considering how small they are.

๐Ÿค” How do you know if you're eating too many nuts?

๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Gas and bloating are telltale signs because of compounds in nuts called phytates and tannins, which make them difficult to digest.

๐Ÿฟ๏ธ To curb this, eat nuts like a squirrel. Slow down and crack open a nut as opposed to taking a handful without even thinking about it. This way of mindful eating will help you keep your nut intake in check.

๐ŸŽ As a holistic nutritionist, I am asked a lot of wellness questions. And you may be surprised to know they aren't all about food.

โ“๏ธ For a little Q&A Friday I want to spotlight stress. A client recently asked me how to know if their body is stressed. Excellent question!

๐Ÿ‘‰๏ธ Stress shows up differently for everyone. Here are some common ways it manifests.

๐Ÿค• Pain - muscles tense up when stressed which can lead to headaches, chest tightness, or migraines.

๐Ÿšฝ Digestive issues - stress impacts how food moves through the intestines. This can lead to constipation or diarrhea.

๐Ÿฉธ Change in blood pressure -stress can change our pulse or blood pressure as it triggers the release of cortisol and adrenaline hormones. These can make your pulse increase and your blood pressure rise.

๐Ÿค” Do any of these sound familiar? How do you know if you are stressed?

๐Ÿ’• February is American Heart Month giving us a great reminder to focus on heart health. We often think red when we think of February which is perfect because red foods from nature are incredibly heart-healthy.

๐Ÿฉธ There are a plethora of beautiful red foods to add vibrancy to our plate and diet. The red color is a great reminder that they are also great for heart and blood health.

๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™€๏ธ Are you a fish fan? If so, are you getting the most from your fillet?

๐ŸŸ Oily fish like salmon, tuna, sardines and herring have higher amounts of omega-3 fatty acids.

๐ŸฅŠ Those omega-3s pack a big nutritional punch!

๐Ÿง  Omega-3 fatty acids in oily fish are essential for cell signaling, gene expression, and brain and eye development.

๐ŸŽฃ So reel in those oily fish my friends!

๐ŸดSometimes I eat sauerkraut by the forkful because I love it so much!

๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€๐ŸŽ“ I paused today to remember when I was going through nutrition school and learned that sauerkraut was good for me so I made myself eat it.

โŒ Back then I was not a fan of sauerkraut. I did not have the taste buds for it at first. But I mixed it into salad and gave it a try. Now here I am enjoying it by itself by the forkful!

๐ŸŒŸ While I donโ€™t encourage you to eat foods that are good for you but you donโ€™t like (there are so many foods that are good for you, choose ones you enjoy! โ˜บ๏ธ) know that your taste buds do change. So give some new foods, like sauerkraut, a chance!

๐Ÿ˜ฎ Yes, you read that right. A holistic nutritionist just said you could eat junk food! ๐Ÿคฏ

๐Ÿ‘‰ I believe overly restricting yourself from foods you love does not lead to long-term change. I also believe in making your food using quality and healthy ingredients.

๐Ÿซ Ditching prepackaged goods goes a long way to improving your overall health.

๐Ÿฅž You can make brownies that are decadent and healthy. You can prepare pancakes that are nutritious and delicious. It comes down to using whole food ingredients from quality sources.

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿณ What's your favorite make-at-home โ€œjunk foodโ€ that nourishes you?

๐Ÿ› A great way to pack in bold flavors and load up on veggies is with curry.

๐Ÿฅฆ This curry was simple to make and gave me a reason to use up any vegetables left in my fridge!

๐Ÿฆ I sauteed veggies in a pan with fresh garlic then simmered them in coconut milk with curry spice. Then I placed it on a bed of organic jasmine rice and topped it off with shrimp.

๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™€๏ธ This is such a warming flavor for winter! Any other curry fans out there?

๐Ÿ™‚ This is your reminder to eat parsnips. But not like Tiago. Please cook them!

๐Ÿฅ” Add them to your carb rotation so you donโ€™t get sick of having just rice and potatoes. Variety keeps meal fun!

๐Ÿ˜‹ My favorite way to cook them is sautรฉed in ghee.

โ“๏ธ Have you tried parsnips before?

โ›…๏ธ Hello Tuesday! Iโ€™m dropping in with a reminder to slow down and enjoy your food when you eat.

๐Ÿ˜‹ Savoring each bite will not only make your food taste better but it will help you feel more satisfied.

๐Ÿง˜ Before your next meal take a moment to pause. Sit and take a deep inhale followed by a slow exhale. Do this three times before your first bite.

โ˜ƒ๏ธ One of my favorite winter recipes is acorn squash stuffed with beef and veggies.

๐Ÿฒ It's warming and nourishing making it perfect for the season. It's loaded with protein and veggies to fill you up.

๐ŸŒฟ Plus, the added turmeric and ginger make it an excellent anti-inflammatory dish.

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿณ Give it a try and let me know what you think! You can find the recipe at the link below.
