April is National Stress Awareness Month, and here are a few ways that pelvic floor physiotherapy can help people manage stress:

Ā Ā Ā Ā 1.Ā Ā Ā Ā Breathing exercises: Pelvic floor physiotherapy can involve teaching patients how to breathe deeply and diaphragmatically. This type of breathing can help calm the nervous system and reduce stress.
Ā Ā Ā Ā 2.Ā Ā Ā Ā Muscle relaxation: Pelvic floor physiotherapy can involve teaching patients how to relax their pelvic floor muscles. This can help relieve tension in the pelvic region and reduce stress levels.
Ā Ā Ā Ā 3.Ā Ā Ā Ā Mind-body connection: Pelvic floor physiotherapy can involve mindfulness techniques that help patients develop a better awareness of their body and their stress levels. By learning to recognize and manage stress in their body, patients can develop coping strategies that can help them better manage their stress.
Ā Ā Ā Ā 4.Ā Ā Ā Ā Exercise: Pelvic floor physiotherapy can involve various exercises that help improve overall fitness and reduce stress levels.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā 5.Ā Ā Ā Ā Pain management: Chronic pain can be a significant source of stress. Pelvic floor physiotherapy can help manage pain associated with conditions such as pelvic floor dysfunction, which can reduce stress levels.

Hourglass syndrome, or stomach grippers, is something that I see often in my clinic. These individuals are not coming to see me because they think it is a problem, rather they are having symptoms of pelvic organ prolapse, urinary Incontinence, IBS/constipation or pelvic pain to name a few. Whether purposeful or not, no muscles should be ā€œgrippedā€ for an extended period of time. They will become tight and weak potentially leading to other problems.
Pelvic floor physios can evaluate the core, breath pattern and pelvic floor function if needed to figure out the drivers of the problem.
Questions? Contact me and we can discuss!

Constantly sucking in your stomach for that flat, toned appearance comes with health risks. On TikTok, it's called "hourglass syndrome."

Survivors of s*xual violence present with unique health care needs.

Given the sad prevalence of s*xual and domestic violence, physiotherapists are likely to encounter s*xual or domestic assault patients and we are often on the frontline when caring for these clients. I’m happy to be a trusted, safe space.

Pelvic floor physiotherapy interventions that recognise the complex impact trauma can have on a person’s well-being is paramount.

I also work with Trauma-informed care practitioners adept at working with victims of domestic or s*xual abuse, who appreciate how a person’s life history may have impacted their development, their behaviours, and their current situation.

Through collaboration, I ensure you feel comfortable before any pelvic exam and we always go at your own pace. You have choice and voice.

If you need help and you want me on your care team, let me know. I’m here.

Compassionate clinicians who are willing to talk to you about all your s*xual concerns should be a standard of care.

It is normal to have fears about penetrative s*x after childbirth.Ā

Whether you feel your birth to have been traumatic or not, your body has been through some very significant and rapid changes.

About 6 weeks postpartum or later, I recommend at least one visit with a pelvic floor therapist. Pelvic floor PTs can check for any tightness, scar tissue, weakness, nerve issues, prolapse, or anything else that might require attention. It’s always good to know what’s going on before resuming in*******se and fitness programs. Visits like this are also really great at reassuring new mamas mentally.

When we know things are in good shape, we tend to be a lot less stressed and can relax more, which is conducive to good s*x!

Don’t carry your worries alone. Pelvic floor PTs are here for you!
