In Chinese Medicine, Yang represents the active, warm, and expansive forces that keep us energized and vibrant. As we move into the colder months, let’s remember to nurture our Yang energy with warmth, love, and care. 🔥

Whether through cozy moments, nourishing foods, or simply surrounding yourself with positivity, let’s keep our inner flame strong. 💛

Spread warmth, share love, and let your Yang shine bright! 🌟

Yes, acupuncture helps with that!

I get asked a lot about whether acupuncture helps with different conditions, and the answer is almost always YES!

Acupuncture is a tool in Chinese Medicine, and Chinese Medicine focuses on supporting the body to have normal physiological functions. Anything that can help us restore our body’s functions means it will make us feel better!

Of course there are conditions that could be too far along the way that is irreversible, but supporting the body means it can slow down the process or let it not progress. Contact your acupuncturist to see what they can do for you!

On a side note: We have other acupuncture stickers too!

I feel so fortunate to have come to this retreat in Western Mass. to study with some next-level teachers and fellow herbalists who are passionate about the Classics. Learned so so much in a week and it was such a precious experience. Deeper knowledge in Chinese medicine and makes me appreciate nature even more. This trip has been very restorative. It was good to see so many trees!

Happy Winter Solstice! 冬天快樂!Today we have the shortest daylight, meaning that we are at the most Yin time of the year. It’s also time for Yang to return for growth. It’s going to take a few months before see actual new growth but energetically nature is preparing us for the new start.

Traditionally we also gather together with our family; in Chinese there’s a saying “winter solstice is bigger than the new year”. Yin transitions into Yang, as everything starts growing again, and so it’s a blessing to be able to grow with our family. We eat little glutinous rice balls that signifies family will always stay together.

Resharing this recipe as it is Winter Solstice tomorrow! I remember having the big family gathering on this day every year and chicken is a main dish. In Chinese culture, people use the chicken as an offering to their gods, and it has to be a whole chicken. After the worship, people eat it which symbolizes having prosperity in the coming new year. In TCM, chicken and red jujube dates are great for nourishing deficiencies and warming for the cold winter.

Ingredients:
1 organic whole chicken
20 pitted jujube red dates
20g of Goji berries
6 slices of fresh ginger
To marinade:
2 tbsp of Shaoxing wine
1 tbsp of light soy sauce
1 tsp of corn flour (optional)
Sea salt to taste
1. Dress and rinse chicken. Chop into pieces. Add wine, sauce, flour and salt to the chicken and mix well. Set aside for at least 15 minutes to let flavor infuse.
2. Soak and rinse red dates and goji berries. Make sure the red dates are pitted and cut into halves.
3. Put all ingredients into a steaming plate (don’t forget the ginger!). Steam for 18-25 minutes or until chicken is done. Enjoy!

Major Snow has started, and sure enough it’s been much cooler this week! In Northern China, it starts to snow heavily at this time of the year. Temperature is going to drop even more after this solar term starts, and it’s the best time of the year to keep warm and replenish the body for longevity.

Getting more sleep during this time of the year is going to replenish our qi and blood and can get us a long way throughout the winter. The Neijing teaches us to sleep late and get up late because of the short daylight. During the day, it is nice to go outside to enjoy sunlight and exercise mildly. Even it may not seem too cold, it’s beneficial to wear a light scarf or hat to protect wind and cold from the head and neck region, as it’s the most yang area.

There’s a saying in TCM “eat radish in the winter and ginger in the summer, and you won’t need a prescription from the doctor” - it’s the most Yin time of the year, so it’s better to stay warm on the outside and nourish yin internally by eating more yin foods. It’s also more balanced to cook high calorie foods with slightly cooling yin nourishing foods, and daikon radish is one that can help with balancing AND nourish the kidneys ❄️

Currently eating this and feeling so warm! The sweet potato dessert soup is a popular winter dessert in Hong Kong, and we always have it because it’s super easy to make. It’s sweet and very gingery because we add a lot of fresh ginger!

Sweet potato has a lot of health benefits- it is rich in vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants. Great for gut health and easiest food to supplement the body when it craves nourishment (especially if you have a sweet tooth!).

Its starchy texture tells us that it can absorb excessive damp, and making it into a soup makes it even easier for the body to absorb and digest. Pairing with ginger makes it pungent, and the two flavors combine and transform into yang. In the fall and winter seasons our body craves more yang not only to keep us warm, but also we can have adequate to use when yang releases in spring and summer in the next year.
