Ventura’s Jabe Swierkocki vs Wilmington’s Owen Moss — the two share the same World Surfing Games heat at 11:20 AM (CT) today at La Bocana.

The 🇺🇸boys squared up “fight mode” for the cam this morning, then cracked up. Loser buys pupusas.

Luke Guinaldo loves La Bocana lefts! 🇸🇻🌊

Luke made an impressive World Surfing Games debut, posting an 8.17 on his very first wave in ISA competition. 💪🏽🇺🇸

The 20-year-old added a second 8.00 for a 16.17 heat total, the first excellent two-wave total of the event.

Luke said surfing in an ISA event, repping USA has been a lifelong dream: “It’s such an honor to represent my country. It’s probably one of the greatest honors to do the sport that I love and represent the country that I’m from. I was in the flow. I’m just performing, I’m not really trying to compete. I want to surf how I would want to surf normally in a free surf. I just felt really good out there.”

Luke’s win made a clean sweep of Main Round 1 victories for USA Surfing with Owen Moss and Jabe Swierkocki also claiming wins at La Bocana. Eden Walla, Reid Van Wagoner and Ella McCaffray did the same at El Sunzal. All three American men are moving into Main Round 3.

🇺🇸🌊 Day 1 Report — 2025 World Surfing Games

Coach Ryan “Simmo” Simmons:
“Team USA came out of the gates on a heater! Eden Walla set the tone with one of the day’s best women’s performances—smooth, aggressive rail work and smart ocean reads for the win.

Reid Van Wagoner battled a wave-starved Sunzal, linking deep bottom turns and backhand jams to take the win.

At mushy high tide, Ella McCaffray jumped out early with the highest score of the heat and backed it up with solid rail surfing—another W.

On the men’s side, Owen Moss started scoring one second into the heat—patented backhand power and style.

Jabe Swierkocki stayed smooth and methodical, gliding across the peaky walls at La Bocana to move into Round 2. A strong, emotional opening day.”
