First, straight out the gate, your nervous system impacts everything and is impacted by everything! Yes, the body you're walking around in right now is a reflection of all of your life's experiences. Whether a prior injury, surgery, accident, trauma, habitual patterns or even just the day-to-day stressors, your brain keeps track of it all and can ultimately result in physical pain, poor posture, poor mobility, as well as things like poor sleep, poor digestion, etc. It is essential to view the local symptom or complaint through the lens of neurology or we stand to miss one of the most important links in achieving foundational and optimal healing. It is my ultimate goal to help motivated individuals with recurring pain and discomfort to return to their desired exercise, sport or activity through holistic means and addressing the nervous system. I'm Monica, physical therapist and founder of Foundation Physical Therapy and Wellness. I was a competitive soccer player growing up with multiple injuries landing me in the athletic training room which ultimately led to this wonderful opportunity to help others through physical therapy. When Iโ€™m not helping my peeps, I enjoy going on hikes, working out on the beach with my husband of 26 years, being mom to my 3 beautiful children and traversing the trails with my two Rottweilers. I am a nut for healthy recipes and holistic remedies for healing. I have a special place in my heart for Type 1 diabetics and I am forever grateful for my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. It's a common theme I hear from people in their 40's and 50's. It's as if age creeps in and posture gets worse... not to mention computer time, cell phone scrolling, etc.!

Most people believe the solution to correcting their posture is just more stretching, strengthening, and foam rolling, BUT they're missing the MAIN thing! โฌ‡๏ธ

๐๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ซ๐ž๐Ÿ๐ฅ๐ž๐ฑ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž! ๐Ÿค” ๐ˆ๐ญ ๐š๐œ๐ญ๐ฎ๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ก๐š๐ฌ ๐ฆ๐จ๐ซ๐ž ๐ญ๐จ ๐๐จ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐›๐ซ๐š๐ข๐ง ๐Ÿง  ๐ญ๐ก๐š๐ง ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐œ๐ฅ๐ž๐ฌ ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฝ

The PMRF (a part of your brainstem), the cerebellum, the visual and vestibular systems are all key brain areas that help your body automatically organize itself against gravity. When they are not functioning optimally, your body may default to poor posture and undesirable symptoms such as:
โ€ข Forward head posture
โ€ข Rounded shoulders
โ€ข Tight low back
โ€ข Neck Stiffness
โ€ข Fatigue when youโ€™re standing or moving

Addressing the nervous system rather than just stretching and strengthening muscles, could be the missing link to making significant changes to relentless poor posture!

I often start my clients with this simple drill to help their brain start recognizing a ๐ฆ๐จ๐ซ๐ž ๐ž๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐ข๐œ๐ข๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐ฎ๐ฉ๐ซ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง.

1๏ธโƒฃ Stand with your feet hip-width apart, toes forward (barefoot if possible).
2๏ธโƒฃ Imagine a tennis ball on the back/top of your head and gently press it toward the ceiling.
3๏ธโƒฃAt the same time, do a small chin tuck by sliding your head slightly back.
4๏ธโƒฃThink about ๐ฅ๐ž๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ง๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐ฌ๐ฉ๐ข๐ง๐ž ๐Ÿ๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ ๐ก๐ž๐š๐ ๐ญ๐จ ๐ญ๐š๐ข๐ฅ๐›๐จ๐ง๐ž while keeping your shoulders relaxed and breathing normally.

BONUS: While maintaining that tall posture, slowly move your arms in different directions and see what changes.
