I think symptoms of anxiety and depression are common human responses to stressors both internally and externally in which we are not adapted to process and handle.

While depression can be felt differently from one person to another, here are some common themes I have found, not only in the work I do with clients, but from my own experiences and struggles with depression.

Our society is set up to encourage you to not feel! 🙅🏼‍♀️

Society tells us emotions are weak. Family patterns and dysfunctions tell you that emotions are weak. Toxic relationships make you feel insecure or not enough for having emotions. All of these internal programs are garbage. 🗑️ It’s the easiest out to shut down, disconnect and pretend that humans don’t have emotions.

Truth is, it takes real strength 💪🏻 and bravery to feel your feelings.

What does this quote mean to me?👇🏻

To be human means that we experience a vast spectrum of life circumstances, emotions and revelations. Human life is about growth, both physically, emotionally and spiritually.

Truth is (I’ve learned this personally and clinically) humans seem to grow slower when we are happy, content and feeling like all is well.

The largest growth seems to happen when we are in pain, struggling or what I call “survival mode.” Pain and struggle, while uncomfortable, has the potential to be the our biggest catalyst for personal evolution.

When we are happy, we don’t want to change that! When we are sad or low, we want to change age that. It’s in the process of that change that allows us to face fears, take action, address parts of ourselves that we would otherwise ignore or neglect.

The power of pain can really be the motivation to transform ourselves into some we never knew we could be.

Why do you people please?? Here’s a possibility 👇🏻

As I was doing my own healing work on my people pleasing, anxious attachment and codependency, some of this information hit me like a ton of bricks.

It made so much sense to me given the family dynamic I was raised in.

Feeling like my emotional needs were not being met, subconsciously created a program that would ‘shape shift’ myself to be who ever and what ever I needed to be I order to keep the peace so my caregivers would *hopefully* meet my needs.

When I work with clients, this is one of the things we explore. It often makes so much sense to them.

Why I love this quote!!👇🏻

This quote is really about expectations and how expectations can limit and even sabotage our relationships with other people.

Expectations are one-sided judgments and biases that are then projected onto another person or persons. That other person then now unknowingly has to live up to this expectation outcome without their consent.

This quote is about the need to accept others for exactly who they are and what they are. It’s about not limiting a persons potential by cursing them with our own judgements and skewed perspectives.

By not having expectations of others we can actually save ourselves a ton of disappointment in life. It’s accepting others for where they are at instead of where they are not.

Instead seek shared values with others for mutually respected and reciprocated relationships.

I get this question all the time!!👇🏻

“Heather! I’m so scared to __________ (speak up, express my needs, set a boundary, tell them how they hurt me, etc) because they always react by ___________ (blowing up, giving me the silent treatment, blaming me,etc). How do I talk to them where they won’t react that way?????”

The truth is, we cannot control how somebody else reacts, we can only control how we show up for ourselves. How someone else reacts or respond to you speaking your truth, expressing your needs, or sharing how you feel has 0% to do with you and 1000% to do with them.

You are not responsible for how someone else feels, how they react, how they behave or how they process their own thoughts and feelings.

Often times when we are more of a people pleaser type of person, we have learned or have been conditioned to shape shift ourselves to match the emotional energy or accommodate our parents/caregivers emotional needs in early childhood. This is common in inconsistent or unstable family relationship dynamics.

I tell my clients, “you’re only responsibility is to yourself to make sure that you speak your truth and set your boundaries that you need to feel safe/validated/seen/heard and how that other person reacts is their problem.”

But in that same line of thought, how you react to others (either in person or online) has 0% to do with them and 1000% to do with you. It’s your thoughts, feelings, beliefs, perspectives, judgments or insecurities that get triggered by this other person, and maybe rightfully so, but how you react is your responsibility to heal/manage.

What do you look for from a therapist???👇🏻

Authenticity is a super important value to me! I try to show up to my client sessions as authentic as possible. Who they get in session from me is the same person I am with friends and family…..with just a few more therapeutic boundaries. ❤️

It’s important that you feel comfortable with your therapist. Going to therapy and opening up to them about your thoughts, feelings and emotions is very vulnerable and if the person you are telling your dark secrets too does not feel safe, it can actually harm the therapeutic process. 🚨

I FEEL SO BLESSED! ❤️here’s why👇🏻

At the end of December last year, I had it on my heart to start a small podcast as a place for clients and other people to get a different perspective around therapy, life’s problems, and quantum counseling. 🌀

I haven’t been as active on it as I’d like (building a business is time consuming) but I have so much to share with you. This podcast, while a little DIY as I am the only team member 🤣 has been streamed in 6 countries. Pretty cool to know my little voice is on the other side of the world. 🌎

I wish more people knew this! 👇🏻

Childhood Trauma is more than physical or sexual abuse as a child. Many people have experienced a multitude of trauma in childhood but don’t know that’s what it was.

Trauma can take the form of negative mental, emotional, spiritual experiences as well as physical and sexual abuse. And there are so many ways these can manifest in your experience.

Having emotionally unavailable or neglectful caregivers is a trauma. Your emotional needs were most likely not met which would have formed either an anxious or avoidant attachment to relationships in your life.

Experiencing financial trauma as a child can program you with judgments and fears around money and feeling supported. This can manifest as money and abundance blocks as an adult.

Want to survive the holidays with family like a pro? Here are 4 helpful tips:

1️⃣ Observe the chaos like a seasoned documentarian 🎥,

2️⃣ Practice non-attachment and try to not take things you family says or does personally 🚫,

3️⃣ Always have an ‘escape plan’ for when you need a breather 🏃‍♂️, and

4️⃣ Master the art of pattern recognition to navigate the your own healing process 🔄.

Anger and resentment are natural human emotions that are sometimes seeded in feeling some level of injustice and lack of authority or control in one’s own life.
