The same goes for local. Just because itâs local, doesnât mean itâs âbetterâ or should be bought over products that arenât.
Here me outâŠ
Farmers markets tend to have a goal of providing whole foods that are quality and directly from the farmer themselves.
This is good in theory.
But, thatâs just not the case in reality.
Many stands at a farmers market arenât organic. In fact, many donât even claim to be because theyâre just not. BUT, consumers donât know this because of the perceived idea of getting better food at the farmers markets.
Oftentimes, we end up spending more money on food that is no different than what we get in the store. In fact, many times no fresher.
There can be fish stands that sell fish, but often can be farmed and frozen prior to the market. This isnât any different than going to a Costco and getting your fish.
But, we think itâs better because itâs perceived as wild (wild fish is different nutritionally than farmed).
There can be produce there where you think itâs organicâŠbut itâs just not.
But, it has the perceived value as being organic because youâre at a farmers market.
We love farmers markets. We also love that it helps support the local economy.
BUT, we need to be wise when shopping at farmers markets to get the best foods we can buy with our dollars.
Tips:
- ask questions at the booth about farming practices, how the meat was raised/sourced, are there any pesticides (organic or not) used on the plants, what do the animals eat, are the animals given shots, etc
- visit the farm, if possible and tour it. Get to know the farmer
- spread the word about great brands and farms at your markets to encourage more people to shop locally and get good quality foods
