Grateful to be featured at the national newsletter of Sports Medicine Acupuncture:

I just wanted to take a moment and say “Thank you.” Here’s a testament for the power of sports medicine acupuncture education and a peek at how it helped us at San Diego Sports Acupuncture steer patients in the right clinical direction.

Below is a “Thank you” email I received from one of our patients who came in to see me over a year ago.

This 66 year old patient complained of debilitating pain in his lower ribs and abdomen. He told me that he saw over 13 different doctors and no one could figure it out.

He was put through all sorts of diagnostic procedures, such as ultrasounds, CT scans etc., all trying to figure out his problem at the organ level.

When I first saw him, I found severe scoliosis and, thanks to the teachings of the Sport Medicine Acupuncture Certification (SMAC), it made a lot of sense to first check how likely are his symptoms to be coming from his spine.

With further assessment, it looked more and more like that was the case—a severe nerve impingement of T10/T11 exiting nerves, likely due to degenerative changes in his Thoracolumbar junction.

Here’s what he wrote to me a few days ago:

"Hi Doc! I hope you remember me from about a year ago, but I am writing to let you know that your diagnosis of referred pain emanating from my spine was in fact the true source of my side and abdominal unrelenting and debilitating pain. You put me on the correct trail and with perseverance this past two years, using your diagnosis, the wonderful pain management doctor at Pacific Pain Management verified through MRI what the radiologist reported: Severe Central Spinal Canal Stenosis With Cord Compression and Concern for Myelopathy at T10-T11. They got me into surgery on April 28th of this year and after 6 months of recovery including 5 months of PT, my life is livable once again. I’ll never forget what you did by guiding me in the right direction so a big thanks and sincere gratitude to you, Doc. ❤️❤️
— John W."

This speaks loud and clear about the power of sports medicine acupuncture education!

“Great things are done by a series of small things brought together" - Vincent van Gogh

Last week, my wife took me to see the Beyond Van Gogh Experience in Del Mar Fairgrounds. Inside there were beautiful depictions of Van Gogh's art along with his letter correspondence to his brother. In there we came across many inspiring quotes. The quote above really stood out for me, since just like every long journey is comprised of many small steps, so is the journey towards complete healing is comprised of daily small victories of improvement.

Acupuncture is a modality which follows that same logic and allows people to achieve fantastic results over time.

Please let me know if I can help you feel better.

As I am preparing to serve as Moses at a family event this coming Sunday where we will be creating an experience of Egypt Exodus for kids, I cannot emphasize enough how privileged we are to live in state of peace and freedom. Just a reminder to live from a place of gratefulness and to cherish our daily freedom.

I am very Thankful for my family and for the support they give me.

I am very Thankful for my patients and for the sense of meaning they bring into my life.

I am very Thankful for my students and for their eagerness to learn.

Please take a moment and find those things you can and should be grateful for in your life.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I was finally able to realize a long-time dream this summer. I was able to spend a couple of weeks with my wife and kids in beautiful Costa Rica!

Since I was a young kid, I always dreamed of visiting exotic places with jungles and beautiful white sand beaches with coconut trees and clear turquoise water. Costa Rica has all of these to offer in great abundance.

One of the things that impressed me the most, was the people. No matter who we interacted with, whether it was in the city, the hotel, or in the countryside, people were always nice and very welcoming. They were genuine and open and went out of their way to make us feel at home. They all live by the principle of "Pura Vida" - which can be translated to "The good life", or "The pure life". Life with no stress, a life of peace, satisfaction, joy, and happiness no matter what comes your way.

Let us all find ways to bring more Pura Vida into our lives. To relax more and live from a place of appreciation and gratitude.

Pura Vida my friends, and if there's anything I can do to help - I am here for you.

Many of us, and myself included, are working a lot. Although work can often feel hard and challenging, there can be a certain kind of magic when you attach a genuine sense of meaning to what you do.
Personally - I love my work. I love working with people and helping them heal. I am always looking for ways to become better and get results that last and make a big difference for my patients.

Today, as we celebrate the American workers, I want to wish everyone to feel good about what they do for a living, and to find joy in their daily labor.

Happy Labor Day!

Tuesdays are usually hard for me. They often become 12 hour days of non-stop work. After getting my kids ready and dropping them in their respective schools (3 different stops). I start seeing patients back-to-back from 9:30am until 5pm. Then, I rush through heavy traffic to teach at the acupuncture college till 9pm which usually means getting home not before 9:30pm. I often feel satisfied but also tired and overworked.

That's why my Wednesdays, on the other hand, are my recovery days! My sole outcome on Wednesday is to feel relaxed and happy. My activities for that day include yoga to alleviate my tight muscles followed by a fun bicycle ride on my mountain bike. I make it a point to always listen to some inspiring podcast or some feel-good music. I honestly believe that plugging in these self-nourishing activities is key for sustainability of my weekly work schedule.
It's all about maintaining Work/Life balance.

How are YOU doing in that department? Are you feeling good about YOUR own Work/Life balance?
Make sure you schedule some "Me" time on your busy week, it will come back 10 fold

Just thought I'd share a proud moment of mine.

My oldest daughter just graduated from highschool today!!!

When I look back at those past few years, I can't help but ask myself, where was I? Did I spend enough time with her? Did I get to create some meaningful memories together?

Most of us operate in a routine around work and family, not truly appreciating the precious moments we get to spend with our loved ones.

What about you? Are you nourishing your important relationships? Do you take time to steer in the direction of what's really important for you rather than getting caught up in the hypnosis of your routine?

I dare you to take time, where you stop and appreciate all that's actually going well in your life. You might see more clearly what's truly important versus what's just urgent and not.

To all of you parents, make sure you find some time to be with them and let them know how much you love them.

It's been a few years since I dragged myself over to an early morning exercise class. It was 5:45am, still dark. For 45min my body struggled to remember it could actually do stuff like squats, burpees, ab curls etc. Anyway, what made me write about this is what came later, an incredible sense of energy and vitality that lasted for hours and was then acted upon immediately to "go get things done". Made me realize again how important it is to take care of my body so it could take care of me.

Wishing you all health and vitality , let me know if I can help.

Low back pain is one of the most common complaints we treat. Oftentimes, the body develops chronic muscle tightness in the legs and lower back. This leads to more muscle imbalance within the postural muscles that eventually shows up as chronic low back pain. With Sports Medicine Acupuncture we are able to accurately diagnose where the problem is, and then offer a treatment protocol that corrects the muscle imbalance and provides a dramatic sense of relief.

In Sports Medicine Acupuncture (SMA) we work with both traditional acupuncture points as well as with unique points known as "motor points". What makes the "motor points" so unique, is their ability to release tension within the entire muscle they are located in. Stimulating the motor points also increases the muscles' ability to "fire" correctly, turning it back "on" if it was turned "off". Using these two systems together during treatment provides immediate relief and an improved sense of strength.

Many people think that acupuncture is painful. The truth is far from it. Acupuncture needles are extremely thin and although might cause a momentary sensation when inserted, you will be able to relax and even fall asleep within minutes. Acupuncture therapy is one of the most relaxing experiences that you can have, leaving you with a deep sense of peace and relief.
