Today is all about education!

Spending the day preparing content for the UCSD lactation program and it’s just incredible to see some of these statistics of breastfeeding over time. The numbers aren’t great guys! 🫣

There’s so much that goes into if and how breastfeeding can take place. No doubt…it’s A LOT of work. But hopefully with some of the info and education getting out there we will all be able to see a little better all the incredible benefits that will come from the work involves.

Its worth the work…I promise. And remember it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Some breastmilk is going to go a long long way and both the mom and baby will see lifelong benefits.

But no mom shaming or judgement! There’s already too much of that in the mom world. A mom should never be made to feel insecure or inadequate by another mom. We are in this sisterhood or motherhood together!

So let’s cheer each other on. Encourage and empower one another. And spread kindness and compassion.

And if someone tries to kill your joy of being a mom, tell them to “Mind your own motherhood”!

Exclusively formula feeding???

Guess what? We are still here to support you!!! We now offer prenatal consultations for combo and formula feeding families too!

Through our various prenatal classes we’ve had families reach out looking for support with exclusive formula feeding. And we are happy to help!

There are so many reasons why a parent might have to or choose to exclusively formula feed. And that does not mean they shouldn’t have support or access to help.

And that DOES NOT mean they should be judged or shamed for it! We don’t know each families story and there are more reasons to formula feed than one might realize.

🍼 Baby was in the NICU
🍼 Patent or baby had health conditions
🍼 Parent has to take medications
🍼 Parent had to have surgery
🍼 Family didn’t have support
🍼 Mental health challenges
🍼 Previous breastfeeding challenges
🍼 History of trauma or abuse

I could keep going but I think you get the point.

We are a clinic for lactation and wellness. Which means we will give you all the information and education you need to make a decision about how to feed your baby and then we will support you through that journey, no matter what it looks like.

We aren’t your typical lactation clinic. We are here to support you through all types of infant feeding. So please schedule an appointment or reach out with your questions.

Sure…its “natural”. But that definitely doesn’t necessarily mean it’s “easy”.

Going through labor and pushing out a giant baby is “natural” too but it’s one of the hardest things a lot of us have have ever experienced.

Labor is hard! Breastfeeding is hard! But in those challenges is a beauty like nothing else. It’s the beauty of being a mom. It’s something we can all survive with the right team and support.

Many have a plan going into labor. So definitely have a plan going into feeding your newborn. Know your goals and what’s important to you and your partner. Know your priorities for feeding your baby. And definitely KNOW YOUR TEAM!!!!

Make calls! Interview IBCLCs. Schedule a prenatal consult. We don’t all practice the same so make sure you’ve established a relationship with an IBCLC who shares your goals! If you don’t need us, we are thrilled for your success. But if you do, then we’re right there ready to help and support you!

Breastfeeding is beautiful, but it’s not always easy! We are here to support you through it. 💕

That’s right….you want to have a feeding plan!

We all know about birth plans. Even postpartum plans are starting to finally make an appearance. But do you have a feeding plan for your newborn???

A feeding plan should be part of your immediate postpartum plan. It includes what your goals are for feeding, how you feel about bottles, formula, and pacifiers, and how you want to approach feeding in the hospital (yes..I’ve seen babies get all of the above without the parents consent 😳).

The most important part of your feeding plan is who is part of your feeding support team! This can include family, friends, but also someone highly trained in lactation support such as an IBCLC. Maybe you won’t need one, but in the middle of feeding challenges is not the time you want to be searching for someone who will support you and your goals.

We are working on putting together a feeding plan template and we always go over this isle our classes. Please DM us if you’d like a free copy once they’re ready to go.

Getting ready for our Breastfeeding Basics & More class happening this Saturday.

Of course we’ll be talking about breastfeeding but we will also be talking about all the ways you might feed your newborn.

We’ll give you all the info you need to form a feeding plan and feel confident and prepared to tackle some of the common challenges that might pop up.

All attendees will receive a free follow prenatal consult where we can discuss concerns specific to your anatomy or history of breastfeeding challenges and how to overcome them this time around.

No mom shaming!!!

Your worth as a mom NOT determined by how you feed your baby! It’s not determined by half the things we beat ourselves up over.

Yet we see it all the time. Breastfeeding moms feel guilty for breastfeeding. Formula feeding moms feel guilty for formula feeding. The list goes on!

We’ll we think you’re amazing!!! We want you to feel confident and empowered in the choices you make. We are here to give you all the info you need to make the best decision for you and your family.

No matter how you plan to feel your infant, we are here to support you. We do prenatal consults for breastfeeding and bottle feeding families. We’d be honored to be part of your village.

Wonder why it’s so hard to meet your breastfeeding goals???

Maybe it’s because there aren’t enough laws to ensure paid leave for parents. Yay that California is one of only 12 states with legislation, but even we only offer 8 weeks as compared to others who offer 12 weeks.

Even more disappointing is the 40 states/territories that don’t have ANY legislation for paid leave.

No wonder it’s so challenging for families to meet their breastfeeding goals. 😢

Unpopular opinion???

Maybe! But guess what…some breastmilk is still better than no breastmilk for as long as a family can and wants to make it work.

There are lots of reasons a family might not be able to breastfeed. Health reasons, family circumstances, an infant in the NICU. The list goes one and on.

Because of this, so many families feel that if they can’t exclusively breastfeed they may as well switch to formula. And while that may be the best choice for some families, others can absolutely do a mix of both with the right guidance and support.

No matter how you feed your baby, whether by choice or not, you will be supported by our team. We will give you all the information you need to make your best choice for you and your family and we will help you see it through.

Did you know the AAP recommends starting solids around 6 months IF your baby is ready? Of course there are definitely reasons to start earlier or later.

Our Support Group is back!!!

This isn’t just your typical breastfeeding support group. This group is for all things feeding.

You asked and we listened. Moms on all feeding journeys have expressed needing support.

Breastfeeding, trying to get baby to take a bottle, choosing a formula, pumping, or transitioning to solids, come get support from our feeding experts. No judgement and no Mom shaming. Your goals are our goals!!!

Baby have a tongue tie, a release, or you think maybe your baby has a tongue tie? Our feeding team are tongue tie experts and can help.

So who exactly are our team of experts? We are nurses, IBCLCs, pediatric occupational and physical therapists, speech and myo functional therapists, and chiropractic. Yup…we all work with feeding challenges. And best part, we work together so you and your baby get the most comprehensive care and support.

Join us Wednesdays from 10:30am to noon at LoveStrong Wellness for support and to get your questions answered.

Lactation support is CHANGING!!!

And we are beyond excited to share the news with you. Nightingale Baby is now Nightingale Nursing!!!

Why the change and why have we been on the down low? We have been busy learning and training….like really, really busy!!! We may have a podcast in the works to share more details. 😉

Do lactation cookies increase milk supply??

The consensus is not so much. They are often filled with lots of sugar and not enough herbals to dire rly impact supply.

However, this sweet treat could boost your mood and that in itself could help your body to do the work to increase supply. I don’t know about you but I love cookies. But there are healthier ways to increase supply so be sure to reach out to an IBCLC for support.

Posted • A recent study found no evidence for the effect of consuming "lactation cookies" on milk production, perceived insufficient milk, or breastfeeding self-efficacy in exclusively breastfeeding parents with an overall adequate perceived milk supply.

Recommendations to consume LCs for increasing objective or subjective milk supply may deliver false hope and unnecessary financial costs at a vulnerable time.

For all the new mamas out there…this is for YOU!

We are working hard to improve care and access to new families. This was one of the first steps towards that goal.

Nurse practitioners provide holistic supportive care with medical care when needed. Surveys have shown an excellent track record for patient satisfaction too

We will be able to diagnose tongue ties, treat mastitis, address mental health concerns, and so much more. All with the expertise of an IBCLC and nurse practitioner.

There are still some hoops to jump through before we can officially expand our services. But follow us to stay up to date.

In honor of Maternal Health Awareness Day tomorrow, we are drawing attention to the underlying causes of maternal deaths with data shared by the CDC. Organizations across the country are coming together on this day to support families and empower women’s voices throughout the birth process, to help keep as many families intact as possible. 💙

🌟 If you are in the midst of pregnancy or postpartum… know that your input is essential in letting your health care providers know when something just isn’t right. Voice your concerns. Ask questions. Explain how you feel. Let your doctor, nurse, midwife, or other health care provider know if there’s a problem.🌟

This morning was all about tongue ties and lip ties! We learned so much from Dr. Hannanvash with Little Star Pediatric Dentistry and are excited for the collaboration to come.

We had the most amazing time today at the annual Period Party.

We put together about 340 period@kits to donate to local women’s shelters and homeless shelters. We also plan to reach out the local schools to see if they are in need of products since we got such an amazing turnout!
