When 8-year-old Haisley noticed one of her eyes crossing, she told her mom right away—sparking a whirlwind of appointments, referrals and an urgent MRI at Rady Children’s. Within 48 hours, she was diagnosed with stage 4 rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), a rare soft‑tissue cancer found in her sinus cavity.

Haisley underwent 42 weeks of chemotherapy at our Peckham Center for Cancer & Blood Disorders, supported by a care team that helped her stay on track with school & navigate every step of treatment. After 9 intense months, she proudly tells classmates, “I had cancer, but I’m okay… I’m a cancer survivor!”

She dreams of becoming an actor, singer or lawyer, & her mom is grateful to see her daughter still chasing every possibility. ✨

This , meet Garwin — a member of Team Rady whose work is rooted in both professional dedication & personal experience. 💙

Since 2020 when Garwin joined Rady Children's, he’s taken on multiple roles & now supports families as a Patient Access Representative in the Developmental Evaluation Clinic (DEC) — a multidisciplinary program that provides comprehensive screenings, evaluations & support for children with autism, developmental delays & other behavioral needs.

As a father of a daughter with autism, Garwin understands firsthand the emotions many families face — the uncertainty, overwhelm & strength it takes to navigate a diagnosis. That perspective shapes every interaction, allowing him to lead with empathy & compassion.

Beloved by patients and staff across our San Diego & Murrieta campuses, this duo not only shares a passion for pediatric patient care, but also shares patients, perspectives & a deep respect for each other’s expertise. While they work in different specialties, they value opportunities to collaborate, learn & make an impact together.

“Beyond the clinical side, it’s simply special to share the experience of working at Rady Children’s together. At the end of the day, we’re siblings who support each other, and now we get to do that while caring for the same community of children and families,” shares Dr. Upasani.

April marks . Every year & plants pinwheels to honor child abuse victims in County.

Almost 40,000 child abuse reports are made every year to the San Diego hotline—a stat that doesn’t garner nearly enough attention. Maltreatment is a nationwide epidemic affecting our kids & is entirely preventable, but it takes all of us to be able to address risk factors, mitigate them, identify abuse when it happens & respond to it appropriately.

Kaitlin, a 12‑year‑old from Washington, is back flipping, running & shining—both in the gym & on the lacrosse field—thanks to the coordinated care of her team at . 🤸‍♂️🌟

What started as knee pain quickly turned into severe swelling. An MRI revealed an osteochondral defect, a rare injury that requires specialized pediatric orthopedic care. Kaitlin & her family traveled to , where Dr. Matthew Schmitz & our Orthopedic and Sports Medicine teams guided her through every stage of treatment. 🩺

Today, Kaitlin is back on the gymnastics floor, has qualified for regionals & is gearing up for her upcoming lacrosse season—all thanks to her resilience & her dedicated care team.

“It warms my heart to see our patients return to their pre‑injury activities,” said Dr. Schmitz. “I love hearing stories like Kaitlin’s & knowing that Rady Children’s plays a role in that success.”

After years of treatment & determination, 12‑year‑old Daniela finally rang the bell! 🎉

What began as a fever on a hot day quickly led to a life‑changing diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Daniela & her family found hope at , where she was cared for by Dr. Victor Wong & her dedicated care team. 🌟

Throughout her journey, Daniela showed remarkable strength & was supported every step of the way by her younger siblings & family.

Today, Daniela is cancer‑free, full of joy & excited to get back to the activities she loves. We’re so proud of you, Daniela! 💙

Meet Kannon, a brave 3-year-old who faced Stage IV cancer with a strength far beyond his years. 💪💙

What began as recurring fevers quickly became something more serious: a Wilms tumor, a rare kidney cancer that spread to his abdomen and lungs.

Under the care of his oncology team, Kannon began treatment right away. Over the next 33 weeks, he underwent chemotherapy, radiation and a complex surgery, all while supported by a team who made him feel safe & cared for every step of the way. His care continued with close monitoring & an additional surgery to ensure the best possible outcome.

“It felt like everything that needed to go right, did,” his mom says. “It was a miracle.”

Today, Kannon is in remission & thriving. He is strong, full of life, and a reminder of how resilient children can be. 💙

This playful, hands-on experience gave patients the chance to explore medical care in a fun & comforting way. Through interactive activities, they learned about hospital tools, common procedures & built confidence in the care they may receive. 💙

Born with only two functioning heart chambers, Scarlett's family knew she would need specialized care. When the time came for a complex open-heart surgery, they traveled from Arizona to Rady Children's & placed their trust in the experts at the Rady Children's Heart Institute.

Under the care of Dr. Nigro, Division Chief of Cardiac Surgery & Cardiac Transplant Services, & our dedicated CTICU team, Scarlett's surgery was a true turning point. Her oxygen levels improved, her skin was brighter & she had a newfound joy that could light up a room.

The final steel beam has been placed atop our new 7-story ICU & Emergency Services Tower! 🏗️🎉

Before it was lifted into place, our staff, patients, families and construction partners signed their names – leaving a permanent mark on a building that will stand for hope, health and healing for generations to come.

This tower embodies our mission. We’re here for the kids: advancing hope, health and healing. 💙

Starting in 2028, millions of children will receive lifesaving care within these walls. Every signature on this final beam is part of that story.

When asked about her favorite part of working in the CTICU, Becca shared: “You don’t just care for the patient—you care for the whole family. It’s a privilege to bring hope, love and joy to families facing some of their hardest moments.” Our nurses are more than caregivers—they’re advocates, constantly assessing, monitoring & ensuring each patient gets the critical care they need. They stand on the front lines, supporting both patients & families every step of the way.

Our 30-bed CTICU (Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit) is dedicated to providing expert, family-centered care for children with congenital or acquired heart disease. From admission to discharge, every aspect of care happens in this specialized space, ensuring the best possible outcomes for our young heart warriors. 💙

Our Heart Institute’s CTICU provides cardiac inpatient care for patients with congenital or acquired heart disease. 🫀 This unique space is solely devoted to all levels of inpatient cardiac care, from admission to discharge, with a focus on family-centered care.

A Rady Children's romance! 💘 This , meet Dr. Sandra Leibel, neonatologist, & Dr. Sydney Leibel, board-certified allergist & immunologist at Rady Children's. 👋

Their love story began during pediatric residency in Salt Lake City, where they quickly bonded over a shared love of the outdoors. Some of their best early conversations happened on ski lifts! ⛷️

Nearly 16 years of marriage later, they have both been caring for patients at Rady Children's for 11 years & still make time to meet for lunch at work whenever they can.

"Working in medicine means there's a lot of unspoken understanding & support," they say. "Our relationship works because we respect each other's differences & share a passion for helping others." 💙
