What began as simple nausea & vomiting quickly became a life-threatening emergency. At just 5 years old, Lily went into septic shock. A physician at Rancho Springs Hospital in Murrieta immediately noticed the warning signs, ordered blood work & arranged for her to be airlifted to our San Diego campus by the CHET Team.

Lily spent five days intubated in our PICU. The first 24 hours were critical, but thanks to her care team, she began to stabilize. One of her mom’s most cherished moments was hearing Lily say “mommy” again after being extubated. 💙

Today, Lily is almost 10 and thriving in 4th grade. She plays sports through adaptive programs & spends summers at Adaptive Sports Camp. Born with sacral agenesis, she has used a wheelchair since age 2—but to her, it’s simply part of life. She even says she feels lucky to use it. 🌟

A day after Izzy was born, a nurse noticed her lips had turned an ashy gray. Her oxygen saturation had dropped to just 60 percent, a clear sign that something was seriously wrong.

Izzy was quickly transferred to , where she was diagnosed with Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA), a rare & life-threatening congenital heart defect. Without immediate intervention, this condition prevents oxygen-rich blood from reaching the body, leading to critical complications.

Izzy underwent an emergency cardiac catheterization to improve oxygen circulation. Then, at just six days old, she underwent open-heart surgery to complete an atrial switch procedure, aligning her heart’s arteries with the correct chambers. Thanks to the expert care she received, Izzy made an incredible recovery & was able to go home in time for her very first Christmas. 💝

Today, Izzy is a thriving 9-year-old who loves Girl Scouts, softball & being a big sister. Learn more about Izzy's story ➡️ https://rchsd.co/696aa5

Born with multiple complex conditions, Bowen underwent emergency surgery the day after he was born & spent his first four months in the NICU at .

Bowen’s early days in the NICU were filled with challenges. For the first three months, he was unable to eat & was in such distress that his tiny hands remained clenched shut. But after two life-saving surgeries & the unwavering dedication of his NICU team, Bowen was finally able to take his first feeds—a critical step in his journey toward recovery.
Bowen’s mom, Annie, calls his transformation “nothing short of incredible.” He quickly captured the hearts of everyone around him, especially his devoted nurses, lactation consultants & his doctors.

Today, Bowen is thriving. “He is our miracle warrior—full of light, joy & a smile that radiates warmth,” says Annie. 💙

Meet Kian, who made his grand entrance into the world in 2020–earlier than planned & in an unexpected way. A routine check-up revealed a dangerously high heart rate, leading to an emergency C-section and the life-saving decision to transfer him to .

When the CHET (Children’s Hospital Emergency Transport) team arrived by helicopter to fly Kian to our NICU, his parents' fear was replaced with hope. "They looked like real-life superheroes," his mom recalls. 🌟🚑 Kian was diagnosed with atrial flutter—a rare heart rhythm condition in newborns—quickly treated with a defibrillator. But his tiny body still needed extra time for his lungs, liver, kidneys & digestive system to grow stronger.

After seven days in the NICU, Kian’s family left the hospital with their greatest gift: their healthy baby boy. “We are truly thankful for the gift of life we were given & are eternally grateful to Rady Children’s & the CHET Team for saving our son’s life.” 💙
