One of our favorite nights of the holiday season! 🤩 was glowing with joy during our annual Light the Way Parade of Lights — a special evening devoted to bringing cheer to patients spending the holidays in the hospital. 🌟🎄
 
The night began with festive holiday fun, & then our incredible firefighters & lifeguards lit up the campus with their flashing red lights & sirens, creating a magical moment for our patients & families.🚨
 
A heartfelt thank-you to our generous donors, dedicated staff & the amazing first responders who helped make this night unforgettable. 💙

This , meet Isabella. 💙 Born at just 26 weeks & weighing less than 2 pounds, Isabella spent 114 days in our NICU & bravely underwent a life-saving heart surgery. Through every challenge, she showed extraordinary strength.

Her parents were by her side each day—reading to her, holding her when they could & celebrating every small victory. Her care team became like family, offering comfort & guidance every step of the way.

At just 4 years old, Max was diagnosed with leukemia. In the early months, he endured extreme treatments—but through it all, Max displayed strength, courage & a smile that lit up every room.

During his many months at , Max's care team became like family. "Dr. Kuo & the rest of his care team made Max feel so loved & cared for every single day," says his mom. "We’ll forever be grateful to them for their compassion & dedication."

Today, Max is thriving & in June, he'll be celebrating an incredible milestone: 5 years cancer-free! 🎉 He now spends his days drawing, building paper robots & going to sports games with his two little brothers.

Meet Dr. Denise Suttner, a trusted & compassionate presence across all of the NICUs in San Diego! 🌟 As clinical director, Dr. Suttner has spent the last 27 years caring for the most critically ill newborns in San Diego County & beyond, bringing expertise, empathy & leadership to every corner of our neonatal care.
 
On any given day, you might find Dr. Suttner at the bedside with a fragile newborn, offering hands-on care. On others, she’s leading research initiatives, speaking at conferences, or guiding the team of physicians who care for our patient families.

What started as a rash at age 7 turned into something much bigger for Izaiah—juvenile dermatomyositis, a rare autoimmune disease that affects muscles & skin. As his energy levels dropped, his family searched for answers & found hope at . After a series of tests, Izaiah began a challenging journey filled with lab work, medications, injections, infusions, physical therapy, counseling & countless procedures.

Now 10 years old, Izaiah is still currently in treatment—but full of life & can't stay off the basketball court! With four siblings who all love the sport, basketball brings the whole family together. 🏀

This Thanksgiving (November 27 & 28), no one is more excited for the Rady Children’s Invitational than Izaiah & his crew. He’ll even be on the court as an honorary team captain!

Meet Dr. Alexis Johnson, a dedicated resident physician, whose journey at began long before medical school. At 15 years old, Alexis was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her right knee. After months of persistent pain, a tumor appeared, & she was referred to our Peckham Center for Cancer & Blood Disorders. From that point, everything moved quickly: biopsy, diagnosis & chemotherapy.

What began as a life-changing diagnosis became the foundation for a powerful calling. Today, Alexis is cancer-free & has returned to Rady Children’s, not as a patient, but as a resident physician. Soon, she’ll begin her fellowship in our Hematology/Oncology unit, coming full circle in her medical journey. 💫

Alexis now works alongside the very same physicians, nurses & staff who once cared for her. “They truly became part of my everyday life & felt like family during my treatment,” she shares. “It’s inspiring to be part of the team that once cared for me, & it reminds me every day of the profound impact healthcare providers can have on their patients’ lives.” 💙

Our Single Ventricle Family Conference was a heartwarming success! 💙 Hosted by our Heart Institute, we welcomed over 100 patients & families for a day of learning, connection & fun. Families joined interactive sessions on neurodevelopment, liver health, physical activity & more, while kids played doctor at our Teddy Bear Clinic & explored a 3D heart at the “Ask the Doctor” station.

We also celebrated our Home Monitoring Program (HMP) graduates, young single ventricle patients who’ve transitioned from home monitoring to regular follow-up care. It was a powerful and uplifting moment that reminded us all why this work matters so deeply. 💫
