Continuing our brain regions series with the frontal lobe:

Responsible for executive function and personality, the frontal lobe is a large portion of what makes us HUMAN!

The frontal lobe develops to influence impulse control, movement, problem solving, decision making, and socialization.

It also helps with procedural memory which is the recall of motor programs such as learning to throw a baseball or ride a bike.

Some ocular control happens here, including voluntary horizontal eye movements, as well as inhibition of unwanted eye movements.

The frontal lobe, specifically the prefrontal area, controls self-awareness and self regulation along with foresight, concentration, organization, working memory, drive/motivation, curiosity and spontaneity.

As you can see, quite a bit happens in this region and this is not an exhaustive list! Follow along for another installment of our brain regions series coming in the next week!

Invisible injuries mean you can’t tell someone has a health condition just by looking at them.

They can still smile, laugh, have fun AND struggle with symptoms all in the same day. In fact most patients feel conflicting emotions during the recovery process.

Check in on your friends and loved ones! You never know what a concussion looks like!🥺

Welcome to our brain regions series where we will explore and explain the functions of the brain! First up is the hippocampus- responsible for:

Spatial Memory - Remembering where an object/place is in your environment. This area can expand in people who rely on their memory for navigation. For example, taxi drivers in London were found to have significantly larger posterior hippocampi on MRI when compared to non-taxi drivers.

This supports the idea that there is a capacity for plastic change (neuroplasticity) in the human brain in response to environmental demands!

Declarative Memory - This type of memory is related to facts, data, and events and can be divided into two parts: episodic memory (experiences/personal events) and semantic memory (facts/general knowledge). The hippocampus is mostly responsible for episodic memory, while adjacent brain structures control semantic memory.

Consolidation of Memory - The hippocampus guides the reorganization and consolidation of memories as it relates to recently learned information. This means short term memories becoming long term memories.

Regulation of HPA (Hypothalamic Pituitary Adrenal) Axis - The hippocampus is a key brain region which regulates the stress response. Current research suggests pathological anxiety and chronic stress lead to structural degeneration and impaired functioning of the hippocampus.

QUICK QUESTION: How do you think our reliance on electronic devices/phones/GPS is affecting our hippocampi? How is it helping? How is it hurting? Drop us a comment below and let’s discuss!

What a fantastic and productive boot camp with Jamie a couple of weeks ago!✨

She was in a motor vehicle accident and was still suffering from concussion symptoms like severe vertigo, headaches, and chronic pain. Jamie had been around the block, seeing specialist after specialist and her improvements started to plateau.

Before we got to the midway point of her boot camp week, she turned a corner and could finally tilt her head back and lay down without spinning! 🥳🥳🥳

What a huge change in her quality of life! Even her hair dresser noticed how she could move her head and neck backwards without an issue.

In addition to improvements in vertigo, she noticed improvements in energy, sleep, and productivity at work!

Congrats on your progress, Jamie! You deserve it and we miss having you in the office but are so proud of your hard work and new lease on life!

Let our team of qualified doctors do the “heavy lifting”. Using state-of-the-art technology, we can detect subtle changes in brain function that often go undetected on MRI’s/CT’s and can be contributing to your symptoms.

Patients suffering with invisible illnesses like post-concussion syndrome and migraine oftentimes struggle to find answers and have to advocate for their own treatment since their testing typically comes back normal. They may be given limited options for treatment outside of pharmaceutical solutions and that’s where we may be able to assist!

We offer a non-pharmaceutical approach to helping patients with neurological conditions.

DM us NOW to set up a free discovery call with our doctors to see how we can help🙏

“As a former client of Oculus Brain Centers, I cannot recommend this concussion clinic enough. After suffering a concussion during a sparring session from boxing, I experienced a range of symptoms, including vertigo, fatigue, brain fog, disturbed sleep, neck and head pain.

What sets Oculus apart from other specialists I had seen was their commitment to taking a comprehensive, holistic approach to concussion recovery. While other specialists relied too heavily on outdated studies that didn't focus enough on the big picture, the team at Oculus recognized that recovery from a concussion requires a long-term plan that promotes healing and prevents future injuries.

Their approach included non-invasive health supplements, at-home therapy exercises for my vestibular system, and musculoskeletal treatments for my neck pain. The team was well-versed in the latest research and techniques for concussion recovery and provided personalized care that addressed my whole person.

Thanks to their exceptional care, I was able to return to weightlifting and intense cardio just a month after beginning treatment, despite initially struggling to tolerate heavy weights and exertion. I am so grateful to have found such a knowledgeable and compassionate team to guide me through my recovery.

If you or someone you know is dealing with concussion symptoms, I highly recommend seeking treatment at Oculus Brain Centers.”

Congrats Annette on completing your five-day neurological boot camp!

Over the course of the week, Annette and Dr B worked one-on-one for nearly 12 hours! Working hard on improving neck awareness, and neck strength, breathing mechanics, eye movements and vagal nerve function.

Annette worked diligently to UN-learn some compensations and poor patterns that her brain had developed which were perpetuating some post-concussion symptoms.

Lots of tears were shed during her time with us. Several “ah ha!” moments and emotional overwhelm due to a newfound understanding of her body and the events that led her to us.

At the end of the week, she left San Diego, thoroughly exhausted, knowing she gave it her all, feeling equipped to return home with the wealth of knowledge she gained during the week.

We’re so proud of you Annette! 🥹🥰
