We fuel to train! Break the fast and practice good nutritional timing! This will allow you to be the best athlete you can be. If you do not fuel correctly you can be at risk for RED-S (relative energy deficiency in sport) which means you experience a decrease in stamina, strength, recovery, coordination, concentration and mood. In student athletes, mental health issues can look like burnout. Recognizing these 5 signs and symptoms that can be unique to student athletes is the first step in getting help.

Mental health issues really do look different for everyone. Break the stigma and speak out when you think you are experiencing one or all of these symptoms. There are resources here on campus to help.

DM us if you think you are an athlete that is experiencing this, or reach out to your athletic trainer, coach, or academic advisor to get resources.

As student-athletes you can now self-schedule appointment for Counseling and Psychological Services (C&PS). This can be done through a workflow that you can launch through ARMS, or can follow the link in the bio, or the QR code shown here on the left.

On the right is the list of therapist that are available to work with student-athletes. This allows each of you to decide which therapist you want to work with.

Please take advantage of the opportunity to choose who to talk to, and more access for behavioral healthcare. Mental health is as important as physical health.

ATTENTION ALL STUDENT ATHLETES

We are officially offering Talk It Out in person for student athletes. It is a confidential session were you can go and talk to someone for 20 minutes. Talk It Out is about speaking with a counselor for 20 minutes about your concerns, and stresses, to get help with problem-solving, or ask questions for therapy for C&PS.

This week It will be held tomorrow in the doctors office in the athletic training room at 11 am. No appointment needed, just come in at 11 am!

Recovery begins as soon as the training session or competition ends. Follow the 4 R’s of recovery to guide your nutritional choices to promote recovery.

Rehydrate- the first goal of recovery is to replace any fluids and electrolyte deficits. Athletes should look to replenish with 3 cups of fluid per pound lost
Refuel- It takes for four hours for carbs to be digested and absorbed into muscle and liver tissues. The amount of carbs needed to refuel is based off of the training activity. Refer to athlete plates
Repair- the co-ingestion of carbs and proteins helps to improve net protein balance. Increasing antioxidants and anti-inflammatory foods can help to decrease muscle soreness.
Rest- sleep is the most vital physiological function and one of the most important factors in recovery. Strive for 8 hours of sleep each night and continue to practice good sleep hygiene
