“Does my baby feel the massage? She’s moving around so much!”
It’s a frequent question from prenatal massage clients in the middle of a massage. You observe baby moving around more than you might normally that time of day.
❓Are you just more tuned in to your body and baby?
❓Or does baby think it’s playtime?
❓Or does baby actually feel the massage?
Maybe all of those!
But baby may actually be responding to the massage itself. Research that has measured fetal movements in response to the pregnant person receiving:
🦶foot massage
✋hand massage or
🤰vibratory stimulation to belly (sounds strange, but it’s gentle), versus a control group of no stimulation.
And you know what??? The group receiving the 3-minute foot massage had increased fetal movement. More so than hand massage or vibratory stimulation. 🦶🦶🦶
Most of us love a good foot massage. And researchers hypothesize that because the foot is so highly innervated, a massage may stimulate physiological responses in your body that are also felt by the fetus.
This particular study was looking strictly at fetal movement during these varied touches and not on birth outcomes or any other variables. However other studies looking at massage in pregnancy and labor have positive indications – with decreased incidence of negative outcomes, shorter labors and reporting of less pain in labor.
So, yes, you are probably NOT imagining baby moving more during your massage. And maybe you should ask for more foot rubs at home to test this out??
