Rethinking your drinking?

The US Surgeon General’s push for cancer warning labels on alcohol is prompting a closer look at drinking habits and is sparking important conversations about healthier habits.

“I think there’s a prevailing idea out there that alcohol can even be healthy,” said Aaron Meyer, MD, psychiatrist at UC San Diego Health. “A glass of red wine a day. And I think this advisory really highlights the fact that even mild to moderate use of alcohol can be dangerous and can cause cancer.”

Read more about the impact of alcohol on your health and ways to make positive changes.

As the Surgeon General calls for cancer warning labels on alcohol, health experts share tips for cutting back safely and the importance of awareness.

Wildfires don’t just leave physical scars—they take a toll on mental health, too.

Research on the 2018 Camp Fire in Northern California by Jyoti Mishra, PhD, neuroscientist at UC San Diego, showed that people who were personally affected by wildfires were significantly more likely to have anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress than members of communities that had not been exposed to a fire.

Read valuable insights from experts on how these disasters impact our emotional well-being and why mental health care is critical during recovery.

With unprecedented wildfires sweeping the Los Angeles area, people may face threats not just their physical safety but also their mental health – and not just immediately after the fire passes.

San Diego County is experiencing a significant flu season, with the latest weekly respiratory illness report showing a sharp rise in cases and patient volumes. This surge, which intensified in the latter half of December, continues to challenge the health care community into the new year.

“I definitely would say that this year feels a little more dramatic because it went from pretty quiet to busy all of a sudden,” said Marlene Millen, MD, primary care physician and chief medical information officer of ambulatory care at UC San Diego Health.

Flu vaccines are the best way to protect yourself from the flu this season. Schedule an appointment to get one at a location near you: health.ucsd.edu/flushot

Did you know Elvis Presley battled glaucoma, a condition that affects millions worldwide?

Glaucoma often has no symptoms until significant vision loss occurs, making regular eye exams essential, especially for those over 60 with a family history or other risk factors.

A recent study by Robert Weinreb, MD, director of Shiley Eye Institute at UC San Diego Health, shed new light on Elvis Presley’s battle with glaucoma.

"Although many of his medical conditions have been the subject of extensive speculation, less is known about his ophthalmological problems, including steroid-induced glaucoma caused by a life-long use of steroids, both prescribed and self-administered, and secondary angle closure glaucoma most likely due to anterior uveitis." said Weinreb.
