"I have no idea what Iโ€™ve done wrong!"This is the way it always starts. Then itโ€™s often followed by assertions they did everything for their children. More than once, Iโ€™ve asked myself, โ€œWhy have I been kept in the dark on this?โ€

This! Thanks Julia

To quote Dr. Bessel Van der Kolk in The Body Keeps the Score, โ€œWe get our first lesson in self care by how we are cared for.โ€

Why is this a helpful observation? In acknowledging that both our family of origin and childhood experiences help to create the framework for how we see ourselves in the world, we can better understand how our perceptions are developed.

Often times, once someone begins โ€œdoing the work,โ€ they may become frustrated, confused or even angry at the realities they discover. The cruel names they call themselves in their mind, how little they expect from those around them, โ€œallowingโ€ abuse and toxicity from past partners, friends, family members.

But as we uncover this, we can simultaneously step back, develop self empathy, and work to nurture our inner child. By doing so, we can rewrite the ways in which we insist to be cared for, by ourselves and by others, and acknowledge our value.

Even if weโ€™ve got a few months under our belt, we were not prepared for how life would shift with the arrival of a pandemic. Add in the retraumatization thatโ€™s regularly occurring for Black and Brown folx surrounding evidence of systemic oppression, and the result is increased moments of fatigue, depression, anxiety and anger.

Our ability to access our coping skills in the same way as before is impacted, and we are left feeling stretched thin. Behaviors or tendencies that we may have developed some management around may re-emerge. When this happens, meet your experience with gentleness, opposed you judgment, and understand that you are in unprecedented times, having never had the opportunity to develop coping for these specific circumstances.

Come back to yourself with a gentle understanding, and identify strategies within your grasp to lessen some suffering in this new version of reality.
