Happy International Women’s Day. I loved what they did with the movie The Marvels with amazing actresses. I also wanted to use this day to give a shout out to my dear friend .ria who not only is an inspiration but designed the logo for Gather Your Strength Counseling. As we continue to celebrate black history month, as a geek therapist and storyteller, I am very grateful to see characters that look like me represented as heroes in comics, movies, novels. I am especially grateful for the real African American heroes in history who paved the way to make it all possible.

I ran a self harm behaviors training for a wonderful group of heroes REACH (Raising Early Awareness and Creating Hope), a prevention and early intervention program in the San Jose area. Star Trek Episode 202 Ad astra per aspera is one of my favorite episodes that models the fight and the need for equality. All of the actors did a phenomenal job. Props to for a stellar performance as Neera fought a fair fight in the courtroom while highlighting the consequences of prejudice behaviors. So good!

I know I’m a week behind the hype train, but I of course saw Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves with my family and I LOVED IT. Definitely a movie for everyone, even if you never picked up a set of dice. I am very much a Simon and Doric fan.

Happy National Pokemon Day! As you are starting your mental health journey, make sure you find a mental health provider that works for you. Give yourself and the provider a chance to see if the two of you are the right fit for each other. If not, that’s ok, work together to seek out a provider that would be a good fit. When you are getting ready to start your Pokemon journey, how much time or research do you put in before you choose your starter? You should put just as much effort (if not more) to your mental health. FYI, I chose Squirtle. I love Water Pokemon.

One of my favorite fandoms is Star Trek. Not only is it an amazing Sci-Fi series, but it teaches life lessons that are always ahead of its time. A major example are the lessons surrounding equality and representation. It means so much to me to see individuals who look like me pioneer through space. Though we are coming to the end of Black History Month, this lesson should continue to be taught, for the sake of people who look like me, and all others out there.

Sometimes we don’t feel like getting out of bed or enjoying things we used to. We may even be shocked to catch ourselves expressing irritation toward our loved ones.
