**What I am reading**

I am a sucker for books where we are invited in to the intimate space of therapy sessions, where we witness the powerful work that can be achieved within the therapeutic alliance.

Dr. Galit Atlas, in her beautifully moving book, Emotional Inheritance, explains how trauma is passed down through the generations, in stories both known and unknown, to the extent that the trauma is encoded into our very DNA.

I loved how she wove her own personal story in along with her clients’ while also offering psycho-education around the impacts of multi-generational trauma, attachment injuries and how repair is done in therapy.

Atlas’s clients found how earlier generations’ experiences as Holocaust survivors, war veterans, with the loss of a child or parent, and sexual abuse brought on symptoms that manifested within themselves decades later.

I highly recommend this book for those who struggle with anxiety, who notice challenging relationship cycles, anger or who often find themselves shutting down or searching for distraction.

One of my favorite things about my new office is that I have filled it with art created by people I love. I feel like they greet me with a hug each morning when I open the door. I hope my clients experience the space as being as warm and cozy as it feels to me. Thank you to julibearceramics and Barbara Rabkin for helping me create a sanctuary of healing for my clients. 🥰

I am often asked to describe Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in a nutshell.
With CBT I help clients learn that the thoughts they have about any situation drive their emotions and behaviors. These thoughts are often unhelpful, formed by many years of distorted thinking habits. Once they learn to identify those distortions they often experience intense relief in their emotions find that problematic behaviors begin to change. It sounds easy but it takes work and practice.
If you want to crack this nut (sorry!) reach out to see if working together would be right for you.

I couldn’t be more proud of my dear friend and colleague Beth Creager Berger Ph.D. for her fantastic new work book for Postpartum and Pregnant moms. She and her writing partner Bethany Warren labored for WAY more than 9 months to give birth to this baby! I look forward to using this resource in session with my new and soon to be mamas. Congratulations on a job well done!

A fundamental concept in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is that our thoughts are the drivers of what we feel which then dictates our behavior. Learning to recognize our automatic negative thoughts is the first step in creating changes in mood and behavior. Treatment for anxiety, worry and depres...
