How can FilipinX professionals thrive in the workplace? Our own Eunice Manglicmot, MSN, RN, shared her perspective with undergraduate students at Southwestern College during a FilipinX American Professionals Panel discussion.

Many thanks to the additional panelists:
▶ Jelynn Malone, co-founder of Mostra Coffee, which specializes in Philippine coffee and gives a portion of all proceeds to the coffee farmers
▶ Rio Villa Ezell, arts producer, Out of the Boondocks, a PBS docuseries that sheds light on Filipino culture and creativity
▶ Bobby Sadsad, power management hardware applications engineer at Qualcomm

Key takeaways from the conversation included:

What fills your soul? What makes you really happy? Let that guide you in your journey.

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. This is when you learn the most about yourself.

Imposter syndrome may arise when you’re not around a lot of Filipino people. Now, with the value of EDI being recognized by institutions, shift your perspective: Filipinos are the largest Asian demographic in San Diego. You are the person that workplace needs in this moment.

Surround yourself with people who believe in you, push you and keep you going.

Frustrations can arise if your parents aren’t in alignment with your career goals. Sometimes it helps to learn about life in the Philippines and the sacrifice it took to build a life here. Your mom or dad or Lola or Lolo just want the best for you. There may be more in their background that you don’t know about.

Put things on the calendar. Spend 30 min getting coffee with a family member. Make sure to schedule time for the people around you.

Never stop learning. Even when you are advanced in your career, keep learning.

This get to know neurosurgeon Dr. Joseph Osorio! He shares more about Hispanic heritage, why sharing a cultural background with your patients builds trust and his advice for Hispanic medical students in the following Q&A: http://bit.ly/48N3Lk8

Scroll below for select excerpts from the interview:

Tell us more about your Hispanic heritage.

My parents are both immigrants from Colombia. Two of my siblings were born in Colombia and two in the United States; I was born and raised in San Diego. I have extended family that live in Colombia whom we visit about once every other year. They mostly live in Cartagena and Barranquilla, both beautiful areas on the Caribbean coast. My parents are bilingual but mostly speak Spanish, so I've spoken Spanish to them all my life.

Why is it important to share the same cultural background as your patients?

As a spine surgeon who often recommends complex and life-changing procedures, it’s essential to have trust with your patients. If your heritage and language mirrors that of your provider, it allows you to connect on a different, more impactful level. I can tell when a Spanish-speaking patient has an “aha” moment and they realize I understand what they’ve been going through.

What advice do you have for Hispanic medical students who are interested in neurosurgery?

Mentorship from a provider you can see yourself emulating is crucial. Don’t be afraid to reach out to a neurosurgeon you admire and ask if you can shadow them. It’s also deeply valuable to have the opportunity to see neurosurgery practiced through the lens of a bilingual provider.
