Stop asking so many questions. ✋

I know—it feels like the right way to get kids talking.
“What’s that?” “What color?” “Say ___.”

But constant questions can actually put kids on the spot… and shut communication down.

Try this instead:

✨ Comment more, question less
Describe what you see: “You’re building a tall tower!”
Now there’s no pressure—just an invitation to join in.

✨ Model, don’t test
Instead of “What’s this?” → “That’s a dog! Woof woof!”
You’re giving language without requiring a response.

✨ Pause and watch
After you model, give space. That’s often when communication happens.

For SLPs + parents: when we shift from quizzing → connecting, kids are more likely to engage, imitate, and initiate.

Less pressure. More connection. More language. 🤍

I used to get so hung up on the “stages of play”—wondering if a child should be doing this or should’ve already moved on from that.

But here’s what I’ve learned: play isn’t a checklist. It’s communication. It’s regulation. It’s connection.

Whether it’s lining things up, repeating the same game, exploring objects, or engaging with others—there’s meaning in all of it.

When we stop trying to rush play into looking a certain way, we make space for growth to happen naturally.

All play is okay. And all play tells us something important. ✨

Waiting can feel uncomfortable… but it’s one of the most powerful ways we support communication.

When we slow down and give AAC users time, we’re showing them that their voice matters and that we’re truly listening.

Try it this week—pause, count, and see what happens. You might be surprised by what your student shares

March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month 💙

If we want inclusive communities, we have to model inclusive behavior.

Neurotypical individuals play a powerful role in building belonging:
– Invite them to join.
– Learn about different communication styles.
– Be patient.
– Assume competence.

Inclusion is not about lowering expectations — it’s about raising understanding.

Every person deserves to feel seen, valued, and included.

Let’s be the reason someone feels like they belong.

Evidence-based practice = 📚 What science says + 🩺 What clinicians know + 🏡 What families value and experience

Your voice isn’t “extra.” It’s essential. When families and providers work together, children thrive. 🤍

Ever heard of the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD)?

It’s a learning concept from psychologist Lev Vygotsky that basically means: challenging, but doable—with the right support!

OTs often call this the “just right challenge,” and honestly… I use that language with my clients because it feels more concrete and less clinical. They totally get the Goldilocks analogy 🐻

Something can be hard and safe to try at the same time. That’s where real growth happens.

Practice tip for home:
If your child can do a skill only with your help but without a ton of frustration, that’s a clue you’re in the just right challenge.

Try this: offer one small support (a model, a choice, or a pause), then wait.
If it’s still too hard, add support.
If it’s too easy, gently raise the expectation.

Communication grows when tasks are hard enough to stretch—but safe enough to try.

Have you heard of the just right challenge before?

Choice-making doesn't have to be complicated.

A whiteboard + at least 2 options = clarity, confidence, and communication 🧠✨

PRO TIP: Make sure your choices are more than yes or no. People will communication challenges tend to have “positive response bias,” meaning they may express positive feelings towards something/say yes to something when really feelings are more lukewarm or even negative.
