Why is the childhood vaccine schedule so confusing for parents? An LA Times opinion by Joshua Rothman, MD, pediatrician at UC San Diego Health, takes a closer look at hepatitis B recommendations for babies and children, and why clarity matters.

The lesson from the past is simple. When we stop using vaccines that work, the diseases they prevent come back.

Behind every diagnosis is a story of strength, resilience and hope.

For Gregory Martinez, living with ALS has meant leaning into what matters most — family, community and the care team walking alongside him every step of the way. After his diagnosis, Martinez faced the uncertainty that comes with a progressive disease, but he also found strength in the coordinated, compassionate support surrounding him.

Through specialized therapies, advanced care and a multidisciplinary ALS team at UC San Diego Health, Martinez continues to focus on maintaining his independence and quality of life. His journey is also one of connection, highlighting the vital role of loved ones and caregivers, and the power of community in navigating a life-changing diagnosis.

Martinez’s story is not defined by ALS alone, but by perseverance, partnership and hope, showing that even in the most challenging moments, compassionate care and human connection can make all the difference.

STI Awareness Week is here, a reminder that taking care of your sexual health is an important part of your overall well-being.
Getting tested for STIs is simple, confidential and a powerful way to care for yourself and your partners. Many STIs don’t show symptoms, so testing is the only way to know for sure.

Let’s keep the conversation going. Talking openly about sexual health helps reduce stigma and empowers all of us to make informed choices.

Take the first step and get tested. Find a free testing site near you at gettested.cdc.gov or schedule with your primary care provider at UC San Diego Health: health.ucsd.ed

Sorting your waste just got easier.

New all-in-one waste stations in our hospital cafés make it simple to dispose of trash, recycling, and organic waste.

Did you know that organic waste, such as food scraps,, don't belong in the landfill? When composted, it helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and supports UC San Diego’s commitment to a more sustainable future.

What goes in the green bin?

- Fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy, and leftovers
- Coffee grounds, tea bags, and eggshells

By sorting your waste correctly, you help divert thousands of tons from landfills each year and bring us closer to a zero‑waste future.

Should people over 75 continue colonoscopies? It’s an important question, and the answer isn’t the same for everyone.

The American Cancer Society recommends colorectal cancer screening from age 45 through 75. For adults over 75, especially those with a history of precancerous polyps, decisions about follow‑up colonoscopies become more complex.

A recent JAMA study led by Samir Gupta, MD, gastroenterologist at UC San Diego Health, found that for many adults over 75, the risk of developing colorectal cancer from past adenomas was lower than the risk of passing away from other causes.

At UC San Diego Health, we take a compassionate, personalized approach to colonoscopy care, listening to your concerns, considering your overall health and helping you decide what’s right for you.

UC San Diego Health is transforming how high-quality care is delivered.

East Campus Medical Center at Uc San Diego Health is expanding access to leading-edge care, bringing specialized services closer to home while strengthening capacity across the region.

In just two years, patient volume has doubled, services have grown and partnerships with community physicians are helping meet rising demand throughout San Diego County.

"Not only are we helping offset capacity challenges at our other campus locations and serving patients throughout the county, but we're increasing the availability for procedures that patients may have otherwise had to wait to receive," said Nick Macchione, chief executive for East Campus Medical Center and chief health officer at UC San Diego Health. "Since February of 2025, we have seen a 37% increase in procedures done at East Campus Medical Center."

A routine chest X-ray could do more than check your lungs, it may help spot early signs of heart disease.

New research shows that a special type of chest X-ray can detect coronary artery calcium (CAC), a buildup that can signal higher risk for heart problems, with accuracy similar to a CT scan.

In the study, Gilbert Boswell, radiologist at UC San Diego Health, and colleagues found this approach could help identify heart risk earlier in patients who are already getting routine imaging.

Dual-energy lateral chest X-rays can spot coronary calcium with high accuracy, helping radiologists flag hidden heart disease risk earlier.
