The team at Silverado Hospice San Diego is dedicated to providing dignified, compassionate end-of-life care, whether by helping patients and families directly or through our work helping spread awareness in the community and beyond. YAY! The weekend is here, and because Monday is Labor Day, we have an additional day off. While many will spend Labor Day at the beach or in a park, indulging in BBQ and other delicious food, let us remember to reflect on and honor the daily achievements and contributions of workers across America who play a vital role in ensuring that companies achieve their organizational missions and goals.

At Silverado Hospice San Diego, we take this opportunity to acknowledge and express gratitude for the hard work of our dedicated team: home health aides, social workers, spiritual care counselors, RN case managers, volunteers, and the leadership team who work collectively to help improve the quality of life for the patients and families we serve every day, even on weekends and holidays.

The team at Silverado Thousand Oaks Memory Care Community was honored to welcome Congresswoman Julia Brownley to our community for a meaningful discussion on how recent legislation impacts assisted living and senior care.

Silverado has a proud history of advocating for the rights and needs of seniors and those facing chronic or terminal illnesses, and we value opportunities to provide our representatives with firsthand insights that help shape informed, compassionate decisions.

Seeing a resident living with dementia bowl might seem surprising—but at Silverado, it’s a familiar and joyful sight.

We’re proud to celebrate by highlighting an activity that brings our residents both fun and fulfillment. Many even participate in community bowling clubs, complete with custom gear they’re proud to wear.

Bowling offers more than just movement—it encourages connection, confidence and a continued sense of purpose through meaningful group engagement. At Silverado, we believe meaningful moments and purposeful living should be part of every resident’s day.

National Spirit of ’45 Day, observed annually on the second Sunday in August, falls on August 10th this year. On this day we commemorate the 16.5 million brave men and women who served in World War II (WWII).

Beginning September 1, 1939, WWII involved more than 30 countries across the world, and reportedly more than 70 million people died making it the largest and deadliest war in history.

On August 14, 1945, Harry S. Truman, America’s 33rd president announced World War II (WWII) had ended – Japan had finally surrendered. Celebrations broke out everywhere and on this day the most famous wartime “kiss” photo was also captured in New York’s Time Square.

Shortly after WWII ended, on October 24, 21945, the United Nations (UN) officially formed, with goals to maintain peace, prevent future global conflicts, promote cooperation internationally and address global challenges including disease, poverty, and environmental challenges. Beginning with 51 member states, the UN has grown to include 193 members and is considered one of the most positive and significant outcomes of the War.

As the week draws to a close, we frequently find ourselves lamenting the tasks we have not completed or those that are still outstanding. This Friday, reflect on what you were able to accomplish and the difference you have made along the way.

As professionals in the healthcare sector, our responsibilities are perpetual, and just when it appears that one project has been finalized, another one arrives at our desk. Rather than acquiesce to anxiety and frustration, stop and reflect on the fact that each project has a significant impact on the lives of the individuals your organization serves on a daily basis.

World Hepatitis Day

Hepatitis is a condition or disease marked by inflammation of the liver caused by several factors including autoimmune disorder, viruses, and excessive alcohol consumption. There are various types of , but not all of them are infectious viruses like Hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E, the five main forms of the disease. Toxic hepatitis, for example, is non-infectious and causes inflammation of the liver when someone breathes, touches, or ingests a harmful chemical. Alcohol-induced hepatitis is also non-infectious, causing inflammation of the liver from alcohol abuse. While these two forms of hepatitis may be non-infectious they can lead to acute and even chronic liver failure if they are not treated.

Verywell Health wrote an article, “What Is Hepatitis?” listing each type of hepatitis, their transmission, symptoms, causes, treatments, and more. We encourage you to read the article to learn more about the disease. All of their articles are curated from their team of more than 150 experienced medical professionals and are vetted by board-certified physicians before they are posted to the site, to provide medically accurate information that is evidence-based research to help readers make the right steps toward better health.

This World Hepatitis Day encourages getting checked out if you experience any signs or symptoms that could indicate liver disease including dark urine, fatigue, pale stools, jaundice, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite.

Today we remember Dame Cicely Saunders.

Recognized as the founder of the first modern hospice, in 1967 Saunders opened St. Christopher's Hospice in London, England. While hospice existed before then, she modernized the philosophy of care by integrating clinical care, teaching and research with a holistic approach that focused on pain, emotional and spiritual support for the dying.

Dame Cicely Saunders was born June 22, 1918, and died July 14, 2005 on service at the very hospice she founded.

All Staff meetings can be fun, too. 🥰

After all staff this week, we held our Post Easter egg hunt.

“Here Comes Peter Cottontail” played throughout the off while staff feverishly searched for eggs hidden all over the office…and some in plain sight….

There was only ONE golden egg in the batch. Who would be the ONE to find it for the BIG win?

Congratulations Hailey Boyett, MSW on locating the golden egg. And a huge thank you to the team for engaging in our liveliest in-office event yet.

Since Silverado Hospice San Diego is a "Level Four" hospice with the "We Honor Veterans" (WHV) program for hospices, we are always looking for opportunities to take part in community events recognizing veterans that served in the military.

As active members of the San Diego Coalition Hospice Veteran Partnership organization (SDCHVP), today the coalition presented a Vietnam Veterans proclamation to the San Diego Veterans Coalition in honor of Vietnam Veterans Day. We also pinned veterans from every branch that were in attendance.

In the first picture is Marine Nick Lomas, LVN, one of our clinical liaisons pinning a veteran.
