I recently posed 6 MYTH or FACT questions. Answers below 👇
Yes, mostly myths, but it was great to see all of your responses.
⭐ MTHFR gene variations mean that your body has a more difficult time making the active form of folate. It does not mean that you have none. Some people respond well to low doses of supplemental Vitamin B12 but others do just fine without it. There are many other genes that contribute to the methylation cycle and MTHFR is just one part of the cycle.
⭐ Intermittent fasting is an amazing dietary practice (one that I follow myself). It has been the go-to dietary practice going back to our ancestors, but, if you are under significant stress or have difficulty regulating your blood sugar, it can be helpful to get those things under control before adding this additional stressor to your body. Also, fasting is not recommended if you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant. Adjustments should also be made for women who are still cycling. Some genes may cause an altered response to fasting too.
⭐ Sleep should be priority #1 - yes, above nutrition and exercise, especially for those who are trying to lose weight. If you are not getting adequate deep sleep (NREM) it will make your weight loss journey even tougher!
⭐ Most genes do not cause disease, but they can become a little sluggish with poor diet and lifestyle choices. You definitely have some control over your health. The test is my go-to for helping clients understand how to personalize their health choices.
⭐ Yes, drink plenty of water. If you are moderately active, you may need even more.
⭐ A low-fat diet is definitely not ideal. The low-fat diet is what led to all the sugar being added into our foods. Focus on healthy fats - eggs, nuts, seeds, avocado and fatty fish. Avoid seed oils! Saturated fats are ok in small portions.
