Have you ever witnessed an en caul birth? This past week, I passed a baby between mom’s legs as he floated in his fully intact waters. He lifted his arm above his head, just as I was handing him to her, revealing his beautiful sweet face for the first time. It was such an incredible moment, that I was so honored to be a part of.

As we watched the sun rise over the mountains, we discussed the significance of an en caul birth, an event that happens just once in 80,000 births. From signs of good future and luck, I shared that in medieval folklore, sailors would purchase the caul from midwives to protect them from drowning on the high seas.

A truly magical and moving moment, that I hope will not be my last!

2024 has been a year of growth and resilience. Balancing increased clinical hours, home life, studying and working (since student life is unpaid) has been challenging, but it’s all part of the journey to becoming a midwife. Navigating unexpected changes that extended my timeline, has taught me patience and perseverance. Every step brings me closer to serving my community in meaningful ways, and for that, I’m grateful. Here’s to progress and purpose! 💪✨

When we give you your birth supplies check list at 30 weeks, you’ll see, “cookie sheet, coffee mug, mixing bowl”, and think, are we baking at my birth? So maybe you choose the first mug that you see, or maybe you choose a mug that’s full of intention.

Should I start a mug series? 😍

My previous post on a true knot was reported on Facebook! While my Instagram presence is greater than Facebook, it was an easy decision to not appeal based on the amount of work they were requesting. Social media will never cease to amaze me, and what is considered inappropriate. Are you still active on Facebook?

✨NUCHAL CORDS✨

After visiting Utah, I took a quick trip to Oahu to visit family for the holidays (What is a better excuse to have a tropical Christmas, than family) and I stumbled upon a family tree book that my cousin had been working on. My maternal grandmother died when I was young, and while I have vivid memories of her, I don’t REALLY know much about her. Growing up, she was simply, “grandma”. I didn’t know her name, I didn’t know her story.

There was a summary in this family tree book, and a note about my grandma, Bernarda, who, growing up was nicknamed “Tina” which meant umbilical cord around the neck, in the Philippines, or Nuchal Cord!

(I also found out that my daughter and my great grandmother share the same middle name, her maiden name, Honor, which was a sweet coincidence.)

Nuchal cords are one of the most commonly mentioned concerns that my clients have when we participate in a fear clearing exercise prior to birth. And maybe hearing that they are a common occurrence in birth with approximately one-third of all newborns experiencing one may make that fear worse, we have to remember that they are typically a non-emergent event. A study done by Schaffer et al., suggests that “Mode of delivery was unchanged in all nuchal cord groups, 5-minute Apgar scores less than 7 were not more common, and admission to neonatal unit was not required more frequently”.

So release that fear, expecting parents! Providers and midwives are trained to release nuchal cords during delivery, and is often a seamless and non-invasion maneuver.

🎄🎅🏻🤶🏻❤️ We had so much fun yesterday hosting our Santa pop-up. Such a great turn out and wonderful time catching up with some of our past clients and grown babies!

Huge shout out to this amazing team, who keep me grounded and sane, keep me laughing, and support me through all my crazy ideas and role play midwifery scenarios (haha). I couldn’t have asked for a better group of ladies. Love you!
