Jazmin’s story:

I asked my cousin to be my daughter's godmother. She was so excited, but then she got kind of quiet and said, "I can't wait to have my own."

That hit me hard because I knew how much she was struggling. She had PCOS and went through multiple miscarriages over the years. And for me? Pregnancy has always come so easy. I hate saying that because I know it's not like that for everyone, but it's true.

Watching her go through all that pain while I kept getting pregnant so easily… I just knew I had to tell her something.

So I said: once you're fully ready to start the process, if you can't carry yourself, I would of course do it for you being your younger cousin.

No one should miss out on becoming a parent. She would have been an amazing mother.

Everything Changed in January

We were only 25. We had time, you know? We weren't in any rush.

She passed away in January of 2025.

I was currently expecting at that time, so I had to wait till I gave birth before I could do anything. But those months gave me a lot of time to think about what that promise really meant.

It makes me sad that I can't do this for her specifically. That's the hardest part. But I'm proud and honored to be able to help someone become a parent. It's the most rewarding thing in my life.

Why I Want to Actually Carry the Baby, Not Just Support

I work as a doula, so I'm already in that space of helping people through birth. I love that work.

But I wanted to go further.

I'm so young and I don't want any more of my own, so I would like to bless others with something that comes so easy for me. Ever since I was a little girl I dreamed of becoming a mother, so to be able to give that to someone else is honoring for me.

When I think about surrogacy compared to my own motherhood? It's something completely different. It's like me giving someone a gift they couldn't receive another way.

What My Doula Experience Prepares Me For (And What It Doesn't)

I've done two births completely natural, and having the knowledge and training definitely gives me an advantage. Birth doesn't scare me, and I have such easy pregnancies.

Being a doula helps because:

I know what pregnancy and labor actually feel like

I understand the physical and emotional parts

I can speak up for myself with doctors

I'm not scared of how intense it gets

But surrogacy adds a whole different layer with intended parents, legal processes, boundaries… everything that comes with having a baby for someone else.

That part? I really don't know yet.

The one thing that keeps me up at night is honestly just how long everything really takes. I'm still figuring out how to be patient with all of it.

Who I'm Leaning On

My support system is pretty simple: I would love to have a doula and my husband.

My husband supports me no matter what. That's huge for me.

And having a doula for my own pregnancy just feels right. I know what they can do because I've been that person for other people.

What I Hope to Feel When I Hand Over the Baby

When this is all over and I place the baby in the intended parents' arms, I hope I feel proud and happy that they're complete.

My cousin never got to experience that. She never got to become the mother she was supposed to be.

But when I hand over this baby and see that family become whole? I'll feel her there with me. Of course I will.

If She Could See Me Now

If my cousin could see me now, about to do this for another family, she would love it.

I know she would.

I can't carry a baby for her the way I promised. But I can do this for someone else who's going through what she went through. Someone who's dreaming of becoming a parent just like she was.

No one should miss out on that.

This is how I keep my promise to her. By helping other families, by making sure someone else gets to hold their baby even if she never got to hold hers.

I think she'd be really proud of that.
