Have you heard of the Abstinence Violation Effect (AVE)? It is a psychological occurrence when people have a slip in behavior they are trying to abstain from such as, substance use or when dieting.
For example, when someone is doing dry January and then they slip by having a beer on the weekend, many will feel like they messed it all up so they might as well keep drinking. Instead of viewing as a temporary bump in the road, it becomes all or nothing thinking that halts progress.
The AVE is common and often occurs with 12-step programs due to counting days and having to start from day 1 again if you have a slip. This is why many addiction specialists don’t encourage counting days and instead focus on the progress you are making internally and externally no matter what slips occur.
