Dr. Julia Rosengren Psychologist that specializes in addiction (substance, food, gambling, etc.), depression/grief, anxi I

Over the past 11 years, I have honed my specialties in addiction (substance, food, s*x, gambling, etc.), depression/grief, anxiety, and relationship difficulties. Additionally, I am one of the few therapists in California that is trained in CRAFT (Community Reinforcement and Family Training), which is an empirically supported individual treatment for the loved ones of people struggling with addict

ion. My approach is individualized to identify what people need and I use a client-centered approach. For addiction treatment, I use an alternative to the 12-step model that involves Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and harm-reduction techniques. I believe in empowering people to create all kinds of personal changes and I use current empirical research to inform treatment. Additionally, I am well-versed in the art of sarcasm and know that humor plays a role in healing. I am a licensed Clinical Psychologist (PSY29240) and hold a bachelors, masters, and doctoral degree in clinical psychology. I am also a SMART Recovery facilitator and run a weekly Friends and Family meeting in San Diego, CA.

Whatever patterns you have in your relationships, helpful or unhelpful, will show up in the therapeutic relationship. Much of what I learn about a client is based on how someone shows up with me in the room. ⁣

Psychotherapy is much more than venting and learning coping skills. It’s a healing of relational wounds with a non-judgmental caring relationship. 💡🧡⁣

I got behind in posting, but here are the from the meeting I run on Monday evenings on zoom: ⁣

Happy Friday!

Some barriers that addiction therapists face in daily practice:⁣

1. Lack of treatment coordination due to providers not getting paid for it and/or treatment centers not prioritizing it. ⁣

2. Hesitancy due to liability and bias around Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT), particularly Antabuse. ⁣

3. Overall misinformation about substance use and people with substance use disorders. ⁣

I have noticed that young adults (ages 16-25) don’t have a space of their own for addiction support. So my practice started a group! 🌿⁣

If you know of anyone who would be a good fit, please reach out. It’s virtual so anyone in CA can join. ⁣

The way that we communicate creates a significant difference in our relationships. 🪴⁣

Here is a tip: Try not to tell your loved ones that you miss the old them. This can feel pretty dismissive and does not allow for the fact that we all change over time. ⁣

I often see two extremes in the work that I do with substance misuse. ⁣

1. Family and friends who are shaming and exhibit harsh behaviors, like taking all their support away.⁣

2. Overly permissive family and friends who have little to no boundaries or who don’t follow through with their boundaries.⁣

Both are pretty ineffective ways of engaging. ⁣

We can show loving support while holding our boundaries to take care of ourselves. This takes practice, help from professionals, and a willingness to look at the role we play in the dysfunction. ⁣

“A traditional practitioner did prayers for me. They shared some songs with me. They put me in the sweat lodge and I could identify with those ceremonies. And from that day moving forward, I was able to reconnect to my spiritual and cultural upbringing.”

Now, for the first time, Medicaid in California, Medi-Cal, as well as in Arizona, New Mexico and Oregon, is set to cover traditional health practices such as music therapy, sweat lodges, and dancing to help with physical and mental health.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced the move this week. It’s a two-year pilot program that applies at Indian Health Service facilities, tribal facilities, and urban Indian organizations.” 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

The new coverage includes practices such as music therapy, sweat lodges, and drumming, which are integral to Native healing traditions and have proved helpful for addiction among other health issues.
