The University of California San Diego (UCSD) Eating Disorders Center is an international leader in eating disorder treatment and research. Staffed by a team of highly experienced and caring professionals, we provide evidence-based treatment for adults and adolescents struggling with anorexia, bulimia, binge-eating disorder and other eating disorders. We offer partial hospitalization programs (PHP), intensive outpatient programs (IOP), and a 5-day intensive family-based therapy program. For adolescents & young adults who require both medical stabilization and specialized eating disorder treatment, we also offer an inpatient unit through a partnership with Rady's Childrens Hospital. Our center also includes a team of researchers who are currently conducting studies to advance our understanding about the neurobiology of eating disorders and to help us develop more effective treatments. We are offering a specialized, week-long intensive therapeutic program designed specifically for adolescents 11 - 17 with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) or Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder (OSFED).

This unique program offers families an opportunity to:
- Receive a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation
- Deepen their understanding of the complexities of the disorder
- Learn strategies necessary to assist their loved one in the treatment process
- Receive hands-on evidence-based therapeutic and nutritional support

Guided by Gaby Bagnara, PsyD, Natalie Holland, LMFT and Ana Arguilez, LMFT, our multidisciplinary team partners closely with families to ensure caregivers leave feeling empowered with practical strategies and the confidence to support their child’s healing journey.

New Research Alert: Emotion Regulation & Eating Disorder Treatment in Men and Boys

Most eating disorder research focuses on women, but what about men and boys? Our team studied 110 male patients to see if early improvements in emotion regulation predicted better treatment outcomes.

We’re proud to share that Dr. Shavon Moore, MD, a dedicated Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist on our team, has been honored as one of San Diego Magazine’s Top Doctors of 2025! This annual list recognizes physicians nominated by their peers and vetted by the San Diego County Medical Society for their exceptional clinical expertise, leadership, and commitment to patient care.

Dr. Moore brings a wealth of experience and compassion to her work with children, adolescents and their families. She completed both her general psychiatry residency and fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego. Her clinical interests include sports psychiatry, cultural psychiatry, social determinants of health, cultural humility, and implicit bias. Dr. Moore has prior experience working with youths involved in the child welfare system, juvenile justice system and with educated related mental health services. She is also actively involved in training and education of medical students, residents and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine.

Her recognition reflects not only her contributions to the field, but also the trust and respect she has earned within the medical community and among the families she serves.

📢 New Publication Alert
Dr. Carolina Makowski, PhD and the team at UC San Diego have published a study in Molecular Psychiatry titled "Multivariate Patterns Linking Brain Microstructure to Temperament and Behavior in Adolescent Eating Disorders".

This research highlights the importance of using neuroimaging and novel approaches to capture the complex nature of eating disorders (EDs). By identifying brain-based patterns associated with temperament and behavior, the study provides a foundation for future efforts to use neurobiological metrics to cluster subgroups of patients and identify effective treatment paths for each group.

Researchers at UC San Diego are conducting an imaging research study on women with eating disorders to help us examine the neurobiology of eating disorders. The study will investigate areas of the brain responsible for ‘liking’, ‘wanting’, and learning using brain imaging techniques, computer tasks, a test meal, and self-report questionnaires and interviews.

What’s involved?

This research study involves one phone call and three study visits over one year:
- Brief screening typically over the phone (~30 minutes)
- Visit 1 – Interviews/Surveys/Physical Evaluation (~3 hours)
- Visit 2 – fMRI imaging/Computer tasks/Surveys/Study Meal (~5 hours)
- Visit 3 – 1-Year Follow Up Interviews/Surveys (~3 hours)

You may be eligible if you are:
- between the ages of 18 and 39
- currently struggling with an eating disorder
- without permanent metal
