Project New Village - San Diego

Project New Village - San Diego Improving fresh food access in Southeastern San Diego is part of a broad-based movement to build social equity, giving way to healthy neighborhoods.

Our goal of improving fresh food access in Southeastern San Diego is part of a broad based movement to build healthy neighborhoods. PNV has embraced urban farming and community engagement as our primary tools to improve food access, food security, and environmental wellness. We use a social determinant of health model which views food equity and self-determination as key factors for achieving better health.

Scenes from Saturday’s Summerfest event at ECC. More photos to come, but what a wonderful day. Thanks to all the amazing vendors, volunteers, presenters and instructors, ECC staff, our PNV team, and of course the community for showing up! It was truly a snapshot of what our vision of the Good Food District is all about!

FYI - please scroll to the last image if you attended the event and are missing your insulated mug! We’ll have it at the PNV office for you during the week, just DM and let us know if this is yours.

We have some wonderful produce offerings on the People’s Produce MFM this week, including the always popular Gold Nugget tangerines and the Yellow nectarines, but we want to especially highlight the hyper-local figs, grown at our own Mt. Hope Community Garden! These won’t last long, so make sure you hit the market early in the week!

Speaking of Mt. Hope Community Garden, this Saturday 8/16 is our Community Work Day from 9am to 11am (4269 Market St., SD 92102). Join us for some light duty garden work, art projects, refreshments, and good company while enjoying some relaxing time in the garden. No experience or tools needed, open to everyone. Also on Saturday, stop by the Uvas Wellness Garden (4835 Market St.) from 4pm to 6pm for a community workshop on Vermiculture presented by PNV Community Rising. This workshop will feature hands-in-the-soil training all about composting, worm bins, and turning food scraps into garden gold! Free to the community, no registration needed.

Some more neighbors stopped by to visit the garden! As they were exploring, she exclaimed look it's Quelites, aka callaloo, aka Amaranth! She said, "You can cook it like spinach. Add onions and garlic peppers! Its so good! " So she harvested herself a bouquet.
