Have you been to Cafe of Life SD ?! I had the awesome opportunity to share about perinatal mental health resources at their breastfeeding circle, including the Afterglow Support group I'm facilitating at Kate Sessions Park starting in April. Love the energy there and the lactation consultants are so generous with their time/skills. Check it out every Monday at 10am!

We've updated our hours! Now open for in-person appointments in San Diego and telehealth appointments across California & Nevada on Monday-Friday from to 9-3pm. Telehealth is super convenient, but in-person especially for EMDR trauma therapy is my preference. How about you?

The next 6-week session of "The Afterglow" perinatal depression and anxiety support group will begin on Monday, October 17th through November 21st from 9:30-10:45am at Healing Home Counseling. I couldn't find anything like this when I was struggling and it's profoundly important that we band together to help each other on this rollercoaster ride of motherhood. We will cover topics related to coping tools, self-care, what to expect, questions to ask your provider when considering medication, communicating with your partner, and attachment with your baby while you are healing, as well as provide a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental space to process with each other.

Babies are welcome, of course! If you are experiencing pregnancy depression or anxiety, you are definitely welcome. The cap will be eight members for the sake of group dynamics. If there are at least three moms, we will do it; if it fills up, I'll add you to the next cycle. Please email me at ashley.s.hanna@gmail.com if you're interested! The support group is $30/each of the six week sessions, $180 total. Some insurances accepted. Check out http://www.postpartum.net/ and http://ashleyhannamorgan.com/resources/ for free, helpful resources in the meantime! Always remember, you are not alone. There is hope. With treatment, you will be well. I look forward to connecting with you!

"In a recent study, researchers from the University College of London surveyed 162 new mothers in London between May and June 2020 using a social network survey designed to assess the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown.

Almost half (47.5 percent) of women with babies less than six months of age had depressive symptoms suggestive of postpartum depression assessed using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. This is a huge increase in the expected prevalence of postpartum depression; studies carried out prior to the pandemic have shown that about 10% to 15% of women report depressive symptoms during the postpartum period.

The researchers also observed that the more contact new mothers had with other people — whether remotely or face-to-face — the less likely they were to report depressive symptoms. While this finding suggests that social isolation incurred as a result of the COVID-19 lockdown may have increased risk for depression, another interpretation is that women with greater social networks are less vulnerable to depression (whether or not there is a lockdown). However you interpret the data, multiple studies have demonstrated that social isolation is a risk factor for depression, in general, and having adequate social support reduces the risk for postpartum depression.

We often encourage new mothers to bolster their support networks and often recommend new moms groups. "

Because pregnant and postpartum women face unique challenges in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, they may be at increased risk for mental health problems in this setting. In a recent study, researchers from the University College of London surveyed 162 new mothers in London between May and June...

Our Story

Where to begin? On a good day, postpartum depression (PPD) is something I want to shove aside and pretend wasn’t an unwelcome houseguest at 6150 Buckingham Parkway. On a bad day, PPD won’t let me forget that it moved in approximately six weeks after the birth of our daughter, EV, unannounced and with many bags to unpack. (If you’re not sure what it is or if you have it, this explanation in “plain mama English” should make it pretty clear.) I never expected to get PPD. I’m a licensed clinical social worker, I know all about depression, I treat people with depression. I’m not supposed to get depression. Surely knowing what it is and how to treat it will prevent me from getting it, right? But expectations are tricky little things that have a tendency to implode and suck you in like a black hole. You didn’t realize you had them until they’re already affecting you and it’s too late. Suffice it to say, my expectations did not protect me from PPD.

So when my sweet, supportive, emotionally literate husband told me several months in that he thought he needed to go to therapy for PPD, I felt unsurprised–I could see through my fog that he had been fraying at the seems, seeing the negative side of things more, quick to anger, a little withdrawn, a little less himself, despite giving his all at work and with the baby–and a little cheated. I needed to go to therapy, too. But it took someone else saying, “I have a problem,” for me to realize, I had a problem, too. Thank God he spoke up and told me. We had been drowning and we hadn’t said to anyone, “We are drowning, here.” The reason we were barely able to stay afloat is that we were each paddling with a broken oar with one hand and trying to plug the holes in the boat with the other. It didn’t matter what we did, we were still taking in water. And we needed help.

That’s why I created my counseling practice, my website with stories and coping skills (that actually work!), and started a PPD/PPA support group in our neighborhood. An incredible amount of resources and books are available for moms, or even dads, with postpartum depression or anxiety, but where are the stories of moms and dads on the teeter-totter of PPD together? Sometimes, you’re up, sometimes, you’re down, but never at the same time. I think there’s a beautiful asymmetry in what happened to us, and I believe it is through story that we heal. If there is anything that can help a struggling parent, or person, it’s knowing you’re not alone. There is hope. You will heal. And it’s my goal that by writing about the process of how we heal, and through evidenced-based practices, somebody who reads this will not only heal and survive, but thrive.
