🥰🥰🥰One of the CUTEST days of the year happened at La Jolla Family House!

Did you know we have a neighboring preschool in La Jolla? They reached out for their second annual snack bag dropoff! This means that all week, the kiddos learned about community service and what it means to volunteer. They each signed up to provide one part of the snack bags, then as a group, they prepped the bags with decor and snacks.

These snack bags allow our families to grab and go, bringing much-needed essentials to their long days at the hospital.

Once all the bags were stuffed and decorated, they were loaded up into wagons, and the preschoolers walked right next door to hand-deliver them! Our team tears up each time we see these little kiddos giving back to those in need.

What's even better - some of these preschoolers are the children of our UC San Diego Health team members! Their parents already do so much for us, and now their mini-me's get to join them! These days truly warm our hearts, and we can't wait for the next time they all stop by!

Get your tissues ready for this one 🥲 Have you heard of The Comfort Cub? This amazing nonprofit donates therapeutic weighted bears to families experiencing loss and trauma. They're designed to be hugged and held like their loved ones, and they come with individual messages of hope as they navigate their grief and healing journey.

Our team member Kirsten just happened to meet Alicia at a Kendra Scott GiveBack Event! They chatted about their organizations' shared goals and communities served, and Alicia immediately offered to bring Comfort Cubs to Family Houses.

Experiencing the loss of a loved one, especially a child, can feel so isolating in the midst of pain and a broken heart. But organizations like Comfort Cub provided empathy and support to our families and team members, just when we needed it most. Thank you so much, and we hope to see you again soon!

🤯A local high schooler named Noah said he had a "few" items to drop off, and this is what he brought - WOW!

We know you're thinking of decluttering in the New Year! What if you looked around your pantry for some items that can go to families in need?

So few families in the hospital have the time, energy, transportation, or funds to shop for themselves - let's keep our Community Pantry stocked just for them! Reach out to coordinate a drop-off time, and THANK YOU!

🍪Nothing beats sweet treats! (say that 3 times fast!)

Tamara from UC San Diego Acoustic Neuroma Program stopped by La Jolla Family House recently. She brought family and team members to drop off holiday goodies for all the families under our roof.

Many of our patients and their caregivers were delighted to see that the very same people who care for them in the hospital were in their Community Kitchen! We often support families from Acoustic Neuroma during their treatment and recovery journeys.

Looking for a way to give back to the community for your New Year's ? Host A Meal!

These young men from Teen Volunteers In Action (TVIA SD5) took a couple of hours out of their busy holiday season to visit La Jolla Family House and serve holiday desserts.

Their generosity had a HUGE impact on the families under our roof, and it only took a fraction of their Sunday. What may seem like a small gesture actually provided a priceless gift - holiday traditions for families in the hospital, who may otherwise have never gotten to experience their cherished traditions. It warms our heart to see this!

🛍In this season of giving, we're grateful for our recurring partnerships!

TVIA is a great example. These Teen Volunteers In Action regularly stop by our to prep and deliver Snack Bags & Welcome Bags for all the families under our roof.

Our favorite part? They take time to handwrite cards for each family to read.

It goes such a long way to ensuring no family goes hungry, and everyone receives a care package upon check-in.

We can't wait to see your group again soon!

So many families spend the holidays under our roof.

If you and your loved ones are healthy and home this holiday season, we hope you will pause for a moment for those who are not. Particularly this time of year, Family Houses are a haven of hope and comfort for families with loved ones in long-term or critical care at UC San Diego Health. Here’s a favorite memory from Kirsten, a member of our team - she recalls one family who found some holiday joy in our home away from home:

“We had a great time decorating a bunch of cookies with one particular kiddo from the Mendiola Family - he told us that ever since he saw the flyers, he's been counting down the days til cookies! His family has never been this far from home, especially for the holidays. They told us that having this event was so great, since his parents have been wanting him to have a chance to get into the holiday spirit. He got his early morning sugar fix making ‘sprinkle mountain’ on a cookie while his parents made a feast of eggs, ham, french toast, and more, and when he was done, they all had a lovely meal as a family.”

Our mission is to help thousands of families like the Mendiola’s by providing all the comforts of home, especially around the holidays, steps from their loved ones in the hospital.

🎁This time of year, we always think back to a favorite moment from past holiday celebrations at La Jolla Family House. We wanted to share with our dear followers - take a look! This is a moment of true selflessness during the season of giving:

A Secret Santa came down our chimney! He was a past guest under our roof, and he wanted to spread some holiday cheer by dropping off presents for the children staying in our home away from home.

He didn't want any recognition for his kind donation and flew away on his sleigh as soon as the gifts were delivered.

Here are just a few of the kiddos who got to pick their favorite toys and games from under the tree. Thank you, Secret Santa, and happy holidays from everyone at Family Houses at UC San Diego Health!

🎅Check this out - our own Nursing Team from Jacobs Medical Center 4FGH stopped by our ! Take a look at the incredible spread they prepared so families spending the holidays in the hospital could have a warm meal.

A perfect full-circle moment happened while they were there - Angel, one of our guests, got to walk into his Community Kitchen and see the team that's caring for his wife right now in the hospital. He was so excited to sit down and enjoy a meal with his Care Team, and he went one-by-one thanking them all for the quality of care they're providing his family.

Every team member at UC San Diego Health works tirelessly to provide patient and family-centered care, and that was felt by all who enjoyed this Host-A-Meal - thank you to our healthcare heroes, and Happy Holidays!

Homes Away From Home

Imagine being far from home, and the unexpected happens: a loved one becomes critically ill. While your loved one is in the hospital, where will you stay? Is there a place to do laundry, receive supportive services, prep meals, and rest? When a loved one is hospitalized far from home, it can make an already stressful situation even more so.

To help ease that burden, the Family Houses at UC San Diego Health provide havens of hope and comfort for families with a loved one in long-term or critical care at UC San Diego Health. For 25 years, Bannister Family House in Hillcrest has welcomed more than 6,000 families from all over the world.
