Tamara Thomas CSOM ~ Founder of Facial Physique

Tamara was born and raised in San Diego, CA and enjoys the beach, hiking and spending time with her dogs and her family. Another passion of her’s is volunteering at local animal rescues and helping find animals their fur-ever home. Tamara earned her degree in Dental Hygiene in 2009 from Cerritos College after having many years of experience in the dental field as a dental assistant. She enjoys her clinical experiences and educating about oral and systemic health. So, don’t forget to floss. Tamara’s journey into Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) began with her own personal and family experiences with orofacial dysfunction. Being tongue tied herself, she went through the therapy to eliminate her oral dysfunction. Upon finishing the program, the spark grew for her to continue with the OMT endeavors. In 2016, Tamara began exploring the field of OMT and with extensive training and education, she became a Certified Specialist in Orofacial Myology (CSOM). And in 2017, she opened Facial Physique. In 2020, she became a Myomentor Therapy Advisor to oversee and guide other professionals in OMT. Tamara enjoys working with all ages to improve oral function as it relates to breathing, facial development, and growth. Her passion is to help grow constant awareness in the community and is an advocate in bridging the gap between the medical and dental fields. She is an active member of the National Network of Healthcare Hygienists whose mission is to integrate oral health into medical care. Selina Preston CSOM~ Associate

Selina was born in Denver, Colorado, grew up in Lompoc California, and moved to sunny San Diego to pursue her dental career. Selina enjoys spending time with her family and friends. Also, staying active, snowboarding, and exploring San Diego’s beautiful beaches. After graduating from Concorde Community College as a Dental Hygienist, Selina gained knowledge and understanding of orofacial myology and realized she would benefit from orofacial myology sessions. This led her to advance her education and training and become a Certified Specialist in Orofacial Myology (CSOM) and a graduate of the Myomentor Program. Selina and her husband recently added to their family. Selina has first hand experience of orofacial dysfunction in newborns and knows the importance of collaborating with knowledgeable IBCLC’s and pediatricians to encourage successful breastfeeding. Selina is also passionate about bridging the gap between the medical and dental field and stays active in her community to spread awareness.

✨ Simple Oral Awareness Exercises for Little Ones ✨

Even before a child is ready for a full myofunctional therapy program (typically around age 4), gentle oral awareness exercises can support healthy facial and oral development.

Try this easy sequence at home:
👄 “EE – OO – AHH”

Why it helps:
• EE engages the cheek muscles and supports lip stability
• OO encourages lip rounding and early tongue control
• AHH promotes comfortable jaw opening and awareness of oral space

These simple exercises can:
✔️ Support oral muscle coordination
✔️ Build awareness of the lips, tongue, and jaw
✔️ Create a healthy foundation

Keep it playful and pressure-free 🎶
Use a mirror, make silly faces, or practice during daily routines like bath time or car rides.

Small, consistent moments of oral awareness can support growing faces — even before formal therapy begins 🤍

Shared for education and awareness only

🦷 MARPE + Myofunctional Therapy = Airway Support

MARPE helps create space 🦴
Myofunctional therapy helps the body use and maintain that space 👅🌬️

🛠 MARPE (Maxillary Skeletal Expansion)

Expands the upper jaw at a skeletal level

Can improve nasal volume and tongue space

Creates room for proper tongue posture and nasal breathing

👅 Myofunctional Therapy

Trains the tongue to rest on the palate

Improves coordination of the lips, tongue, and jaw

Supports nasal breathing habits and functional stability

✨ Together, they support:
✔️ Better tongue posture
✔️ More balanced muscle forces
✔️ Improved breathing patterns
✔️ More stable orthodontic outcomes

💡 Expansion creates the space—
Function helps the body keep it.

When your tongue creates a strong seal against your palate, it helps stabilize your airway, improve nasal breathing, enhance sleep quality, and even influence healthy facial growth.

🎯 Try this:
Press your tongue firmly to the roof of your mouth, then release it with a clean “pop.”

✔️ Lips soft and closed
✔️ Jaw relaxed and still
✔️ Breathing steadily through your nose

🦷 Curious how targeted tongue exercises can boost your breathing and sleep? Schedule your consultation through the link in bio.

🚩 Airway Red Flags Parents Are Rarely Told About 🚩

These are things we still hear every week… and they matter more than most realize 👇

❌ Braces without myofunctional therapy
Teeth can be moved, but if the tongue, lips, and breathing patterns don’t change, the body often pulls things right back.

❌ “Wait until age 7 for palatal expansion”
Growth is happening before age 7. The palate, airway, and nasal space are developing early — and early support can guide healthier growth patterns.

❌ “Bedwetting is normal”
Chronic bedwetting can be a sign of disrupted sleep, breathing challenges, or nervous system stress — not just a phase to outgrow.

❌ Tonsils & adenoids removed without addressing muscles or breathing
Surgery can remove tissue, but it doesn’t retrain how a child breathes, rests their tongue, or stabilizes the airway long-term.

✨ The takeaway:
Structure matters.
Function matters.
Breathing matters.

Braces can move teeth…
but the tongue helps shape the space they move into 👅✨

When tongue mobility or resting posture is limited, the tongue may struggle to:

Rest fully on the palate

Support proper jaw development

Maintain orthodontic results long-term

This is why many orthodontic plans now include myofunctional therapy—to support:
✔️ Tongue strength & coordination
✔️ Nasal breathing habits
✔️ Balanced muscle forces on the teeth and jaws

✨ Orthodontics + functional therapy = better stability and airway-friendly growth.

💬 Curious if tongue function could be influencing orthodontic outcomes?
