“Will I ever sleep again?”

A question asked at 2am… 3:47am… and again at 5:12am. 😵‍💫

So here’s the deal:

Yes — babies wake often. Whether they are breastfeeding OR bottle feeding.

This frequent waking is biologically-driven: their bellies are small, their sleep cycles are short (to protect against SIDS), and their brains are busy building new skills.

But that doesn’t mean you’re destined for a lifetime of 23-minute naps and cold coffee.

Sleep improves with time, rhythm, and support — no matter how you feed.

And anyone telling you to just “give formula so they sleep” is skipping a whole lot of nuances.

So no, you’re baby isn’t broken.

You’re just raising a human with a tiny tummy and a big need for closeness. 💤💛

“Breastfeeding is medicine.”

Indigenous Milk Medicine Week (Aug 8-14) honors the strength, connection, and healing that community-centered lactation care brings—past, present, and future.

✨ From the wisdom of Ancestors to the loving care of today’s birthkeepers, Milk Medicine has always been a powerful act of sovereignty, survival, and love.

At San Diego Breastfeeding Center, we stand in solidarity with Indigenous birthkeepers and lactation providers, honoring their leadership, wisdom, and the unwavering support they offer to their community.

📲 Follow to learn more, support, and uplift their vital work - not just this week, but every week of the year!

Wondering if you can mix pumped milk from different sessions?

You’re not alone—this is one of the most common questions we hear.

Here’s a simple rule: don’t combine warm milk with chilled milk. Let both cool to the same temp in the fridge before combining.

💡 And for easier bottle prep? Store milk in 2–4 oz increments. Your future self (and your snacker baby) will thank you.

🌍 It’s World Breastfeeding Week!

This year’s theme is all about building sustainable systems to support lactation—and protecting our planet while we’re at it.

💭 Did you know that breastfeeding is one of the original climate-friendly practices? It requires no packaging, shipping, or manufacturing—just your body and the right support.

That’s where the Warm Chain comes in:
From nurses and lactation consultants to coworkers, doulas, and partners—each link in the support chain matters in making chest/breastfeeding more possible for families.

🌀 As a lactating parent, you're part of the chain, too - your support and encouragement for other lactating parents can make all the difference! We see it every week at our breastfeeding support group!

👇 Tag someone in your Warm Chain and say thank you!

If your ni**le shield is helping with latching, try once a day to latch without it—you might be surprised when your baby figures it out! Another trick parents use is the 'Bait and Switch'—start with the shield, then slip it off once your baby is in a coordinated sucking rhythm.

Important Tip: Keep an eye on your baby’s diapers and weight gain, as shields can sometimes reduce milk transfer.

“Do I have to give up coffee while chest/breastfeeding?”

You just gave birth to a human.

You deserve the coffee.

☕ Yes, caffeine does pass into your milk.

BUT — only a tiny bit. Most babies are totally fine with 1 cup a day.

If your baby starts acting like they just took a shot of espresso at midnight, sure, maybe adjust to half-caf.

But otherwise?

Keep sipping. Keep surviving. You’re doing great. 💪
