Halotherapy & Viruses
Halotherapy uses dry aerosolized salt, which you breathe in. Research shows benefits mainly for respiratory health and inflammation, but the “virus-killing” effect is indirect:
• Mucus thinning: Inhaling fine salt particles can help loosen and thin mucus in the airways, making it easier to clear out pathogens.
• Improved cilia function: Salt helps restore normal cilia movement so they can more effectively sweep out irritants and microbes.
• Anti-inflammatory & mild antimicrobial action: Salt particles can inhibit some bacterial growth and reduce airway inflammation, but for viruses, the main benefit is improving your body’s own clearance mechanisms.
• Reduced viral load by clearance: If you’re regularly clearing mucus and debris, you’re reducing the total amount of virus in your respiratory tract, which may shorten illness or lower severity — but this is supportive care, not direct viral destruction.

💡 Bottom line: Neither saline rinses nor halotherapy “kill” viruses, but both can help your respiratory system flush them out faster and maintain healthier airway defenses, which can reduce the duration or severity of illness.
