At the UCSD Student-Run Free Clinic Project, we have a philosophy of care that is humanistic, empowering, and transdisciplinary, where the community is the teacher. The UCSD Student-Run Free Clinic Project maintains four student-run, non-profit, free clinics headquartered at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine in La Jolla, CA. The UCSD Student-Run Free Clinic Project is 1 of

approximately 24 student-run clinic programs in the nation: students plan, manage, and carry out clinic operations under the supervision of licensed physicians. The UCSD Student-Run Free Clinic Project seeks to provide high-quality and comprehensive care to uninsured and underserved patients throughout San Diego, who cannot otherwise afford access to care; the majority of our patients are working poor. Our four clinics are located at the First Lutheran Church in Downtown San Diego, the Pacific Beach United Methodist Church in Pacific Beach, Christ Ministry Center of the United Methodist Church in Normal Heights, and Golden Avenue Elementary School in Lemon Grove.

Our Story

We began in 1997 with one site in the basement of a church in Pacific Beach, where an excellent program was working with the street homeless, called Harvest for the Hungry. Now we have five sites, including three community churches and inner city school, and Veteran's Village (Dental Care only) and are open somewhere each day of the week. Our program is possible because of our remarkable and long standing community partners.

The passion of the medical students is key to the success of our program. They arrive in medical school with passion, compassion, and a desire to make a difference and we keep it alive. We have several programs that nourish children in the schools including an inner city middle school elective in which students learn to be youth health promoters.
