✨ Business Update ✨

I’m officially going out on maternity leave to as I eagerly await our son’s arrival 🫶

I will return to patient care in the fall, and look forward to having an office (more info to come!!), teaching more monthly prenatal classes (dates to be announced) and most importantly, seeing all of you!

Let’s break down the definition and purpose of cluster feeding.

Cluster feeding is when baby has back to back feedings.

This happens predictably before your baby has a growth spurt, when your baby is signaling your body to make more milk.

Your baby and your body are smart, and working together! 👏

Cluster feeding also can happen at certain times of the day, typically the late afternoon or evening.

But every baby is different! You will learn your baby’s rhythm 🫶

🚩 But if feeding feels never-ending or like your baby is never satisfied, we want to figure out why that’s happening.

Answering the question “how do I know my newborn is getting enough??”

Since our babies don’t have a full and empty tank for us to look at and measure, here are a few tools we can use to check in with how feedings are going:

✅ Diaper Count

✅ Weight

✅ Feeding Behavior

And if you are noticing that your baby is experiencing any of these…

🚩Too few wet diapers
🚩Too few dirty diapers
🚩Feedings that consistently “take forever”
🚩Baby immediately falls asleep at the beginning of each feeding
🚩Weight loss is greater than 7-10% of birthweight
🚩Infant is not back to birthweight by 2 weeks of life

… these can indicate your baby needs a little extra support with feeding.

✨my favorite tips when a difficult feeding comes✨

It is so normal to have feedings that are challenging, and others that feel like you and your baby are in a groove.

If a majority of feedings are difficult to get through, then I highly recommend seeing an IBCLC!

You don’t have to figure it out on your own.

Setting up your pump for the first time can feel like building Ikea furniture- the directions are unclear and it looks overwhelming 🙃.

Your pump may need some adjustments if you are experiencing:

+ pain during or after pumping
+ recurrent clogged ducts
+ pumping less milk than before
+ feeling like you don’t fully empty

Start by:
+ ensuring proper fl**ge fit (an LC can help you with this!)
+ checking all connections
(bonus tip: see how often the manufacturer recommends replacing parts, like the duckbill, and replace if within the time frame)
+ evaluate how efficiently and effectively you are pumping.
