Potty training is a big milestone for you and your toddler. Here are 3 tips from a speech & language perspective to help along the way!

1. If your child is not yet using words to communicate his/her wants or needs, incorporate the ‘potty’ sign or new gesture, such as patting diaper/pull-up/underwear. This is also a great strategy to incorporate long before you begin potty training!

2. Strengthen your child’s understanding (receptive language) of the toileting routine, such as labeling items and actions as you use them in the bathroom (e.g. toilet, water, flush) or letting your child watch you use the bathroom and narrate actions.

3. Read and sing songs about using the potty. You can even role play toileting with dolls or stuffed animals. These are great ways to introduce the concept and new vocabulary associated with the routine!

Many families enjoy snowy mornings, days off from school, holiday parties, sweet treats, and less structure than typical❄️🌲👦

👉🏼For children with sensory processing deficits, the holiday season can be hard. It may feel like a season of chaos, frustration and dysregulation. The sweetest of children can also be “off” during the holidays!

🧐Detect when your child Is experiencing sensory overload and reduce negative behaviors.

👉🏼Triggers leading to overload:
loud noises, busy spaces, environmental changes, unwanted physical contact, strong smells, or uncomfortable clothing!

Strengthen gross motor skills by stomping, throwing and squatting!☀️

🍂Boost fine motor by holding a leaf by its stem or grasping a giant handful with one hand!

🗣️Label items and narrate actions by saying so your child learns the words for what he/she is experiencing! Integrate signs for ‘more’, ‘again’, ‘help’ and ‘all done’.

Expose your child to new textures and sounds as you crunch, roll and throw!

Fine-motor skills are so important for your child’s development🏃

The term “fine-motor” is used a lot, but why is it so important for kiddos?

Fine-motor skills give children the ability to control small muscles (particularly in the hands).👐

Underdeveloped fine-motor skill may cause delays in a child’s ability to complete daily tasks. Without the ability to complete every day activities, a child's self esteem can suffer, their academic performance is compromised, and their play options are very limited.

Well-developed fine motor skills can lead to increased independence in self-care, writing/drawing, and play activities.🙌
